It's a great way, if you're at uni or within a popular organisation, to see other people's photos and communicate. Much like Myspace, but IMO a bit clearer and more community-oriented. There are groups, you can organise events, and post blog entries and the like. Plus, although it asks for a photo, you don't actually need one to sign up. Bonus!
For the record, there IS a grandprixgames.org group on there, but we only have 5 members. COME ON PEOPLE!
One last thing.... Facebook WILL take over your life without warning. You can EASILY lose a couple of hours checking out groups and what other people have written, photos that make you chuckle etc...
