and pretty much any printer, scanner or webcam.

Funnily enough I have all 3 of those in Vista working fine. The only one I had problems with was my MP3 Player was too old and Creative refused to do drivers, but some random online hacked up the XP ones and it works perfectly.

I installed it over Christmas on dads PC, a Pentium 4 1.5 GHz and 512 Mb RAM. For what he needed (the internet, email, Microsoft Money) it ran just as fast as XP did. For once I think the minimum specs are quite realistic.

I never actually saw the benefit Dave had with SuperFetch until this weekend when I installed Adobe Premiere. The first few times it took the usual 15 seconds to load, but now, as Dave says it opens in 2 seconds. It actually takes longer to open my project file than load the program itself.

Nothing to complain about Windows Vista until now, except for the lack of a 5.1 sound driver compatible with it (or my inability to find one). Have ASUS released (or: will they release) a sound driver for the P5GPL-X motherboard? Although an offboard sound card isn't what I consider expensive, I don't like the idea of having to buy one.

Even if you did buy one, if it were a Creative one, the chances are it wouldn't work in 5.1 anyway - certainly an Audigy (I know the XFI did have issues earlier in Vista's life, but they may work now - I couldn't say).

As for your old chip, apparently these are the drivers, but the ASUS FTP is down at the moment (as it so often is....):
x86 (32-bit): [ftp.asus.com]

x64 (64-bit): [ftp.asus.com]

I did take these links from a post in another forum through a google search, so they might be dead now anyway, but I'll check when the ASUS FTP is back up.

Hopefully they'll solve your issues. :)

//edit: just noticed that both links are the same, so I assume the package contains both x64 and x86

im running onboard sound from my asus mobo (p5n32 something or other) and in the speaker setup it shows 5.1 working fine, in most games i only get 2 speakers but, and music aswell. piece of crap.

this guy i was speaking to at the pc shop when i got my ram replaced was egging me into buying a XF1 but i really dont want a creative, id rather wait for an asus card

Is it possible to download that file from any other site?

EDIT 1: I've found this link (in case anybody else needs the driver):

[dlsvr01.asus.com]

EDIT 2: I guess I'll return to XP. Those drivers did not solve my problems and I'm f**k up of compatibility issues with other peripherals that I have.

What would you say is the best Internet Security to use with Vista?

I normally would use Zone Alarm but it isnt compatible with Vista yet or it wasnt.

Hardware firewall all the way :)

I've lived for many years with my trusty routers NAT and firewall and never had any problems. I don't even run anti virus software either - just don't click on dodgy things :)

There's no need for a software firewall when you have a hardware one. Hardware is vastly superior.

Remember if you're turning the windows firewall off to disable the notifications from the security centre or windows will constantly bug you about it
