Im doing some work, and need to answer this question.

"Explain why an electric motor linked to a rotate generator, which provides power to the same motor does not yeild a 'perpetual motion' device? Discuss energy losses of such a setup."

I cant seem to find anything to help me :(

Anyhelp would be great thanks.

surely you've learnt something on the subject already in your course? or have they just plucked a random question out of thin air on something you've never been taught or shown?

Oh dont get me started lol.

Our first lecturer for electronics left, but before he left he wrote out our exam.

So you would expect the new people to look at this and teach us the relevant info right ? Well, we thought this until we recieved the exam. Nothing I had learnt in the last 4weeks or so of having the new lecturers was in the exam =/

Weve all complained about it because its just been @#$%& up, one lecturer cant speak English very well, hes quiet, and just a nob. On Thursday, out of 80 people who are supposed to turn up, 7 did, and yet in the previous lesson it was full. :S

Weve been given this work, and are supposed to use the material he has given us, and out of 7questions there are two, which make use of what he has given us. And thats like out of 20odd pages of notes. Even the class work for this stuff has been irrelivant.

But yeah, like I said, the students have complained...

Another funny thing is, in the Uni perspectus, it clearly states, assessment will be done by coursework ONLY. And yet, ive had 2 pieces of coursework, both of which are small, very small, and yet I will have had at least 10 exams before the year is out :S and my coursework wont count for @#$%&, because I dont have to technically do it to pass this year :S The exams count for so much more.

A blatent lie. And apparently a solution will be found next year, well what f*cking good is it to us if theres a solution next year !! Grr !

the the generator will output more than just electricity, think of sound and heat etc

I wasn't kidding, it's one of Newton's laws....
This is A-level physics, and I sorta wished I hadn't chucked out my notes! ;)

Any motor does more than just generate continuous kinetic energy, there is also sound and heat energy, and some light energy. However, in order to get the "perpetual motion" device to work, there has to be zero energy loss, which is physically impossible. The device also has to be started by something else, which uses up more energy, thus negates the "perpetual motion" device.

aah, i see, it's everyone else's fault apart from yours.

maybe if you spent more time studying and less time dancing to hardcore thrash death metal like McFly and My Chemical Incontinence, you'd know what to do ;)

Haha oh god how i hate them lol. and and thing is we did study what we were told to, which was the wrong stuff, and we ( the students ) had no idea it was the wrong stuff, until ofc the exam came.

If it's all irrelevant, write about something you know...like vortex generators.

If they're asking for proof it requires some very serious mathematics to show it, so I doubt that's what they're asking. You probably need to talk about the limits of efficiency such as eddies created from induction and the limiting factor of that, you could also mention the other obvious stuff such as the intrinsic friction you will always have, finite resistance in wires and coils (yes superconduction might work, but what effect will this have on the efficiency ) etc etc. You really should be laughing away at such an easy question if you are studying electronics, I haven't a clue about electronics but I can get a few ideas about this, you should be steaming through it, don't blame others ;)
