NFL coming to the UK this year. Do you care?

I am one of those few Americans that get up early on weekends to watch Formula One and EPL matches. My first love is the NFL(NY Jets).

With news of a regular season game coming to London, rumored to be NY Giants versus Miami Dolphins,I am curious to know if there is any excitment at all over there?

Not really. Never watched NFL and I don't think many Brits understand the rules at all. Indeed Max Moseley once said in his monthly F1 Racing column that Americans might not understand the rules of F1 in the way we don't understand NFL. At least I think that is what he said.

I watch NFL!! Not often, because it's on late night and on silly channels, but I love it! It's a weird, quirky game compared to something like football or rugby, but I understand the rules and respect some of the things they make use of like rolling subs and video replays.

I don't erally 'support' a team as such, but was cheering for the New England Patriots in the Superbowl a few years back.

theres quite a few people who watch the show i think, but theres not been much in the press about the game, if its at wembley then i may look into going as it will be cool to go to a live game

So long as it comes over as successfully as (N)ASCAR did, then I'll be happy.

Anyone know what channel it'll be on? If its during the Uni term time it'd have to be on a terrestrial channel. If its during the summer I could watch it on Sky Sports.

i think they are showing the superbowl on itv 1 this year, the season is usually in the autumn/winter months they might have some highlights on five but can be sure of that.

its a very tactical sport and its quite interesting to watch although it can be a little slow after being used to football/rugby etc

Yeah don't they have lots of little breaks or something?

Looks like it might be at HQ instead of wembley, which I prefer - nothing like a twickenham atmosphere!

Pkay, so thre won't be swing low, but I bet it'll be great. Never really given much time to the game - but a year or so ago I didn't know a thing about rugby, and now I pretty much get all the rules, though I can't alwways see handling in the rucks and stuff, so it can't be too hard to learn!

Guys, I wish I could sit down with you and explain it. Maybe I will list the "basic" rules just so you could give it an honest try and see if maybe you might like it.

The National Football League(NFL)is huge over here. It passed baseball years ago because it has competitive balance for all 32 teams. Each team has a salary cap of about 75 million/year. So each team spends the same and at times has to let key players go because they can no longer keep their salary below the spending cap limit. So small market cities can compete with New York, Washington, Chicago etc.....

The season usually starts after our "Labor Day" in September. Played Every Sunday with one nationally televised Monday Night game each week. The season is 17 weeks long with playoffs going until mid January and then Superbowl in February.

By the way that little stop between plays is called a "huddle". Players gather in a circle and the Quarterback tells them the next play. Plays are received via little speakers in the Quarterbacks helmet sent in by the coach(manager). plays are usually selected based on down and distance.

and it takes 5 hours for the offensive team to move half a yard. ;)

Long story short: NFL would be bearable if you got rid of the pointless standing around between plays and made the game run for the hour that it's supposed to.

I like the concept of the breaks, personally, but I agree that they are FAR too long. It's like rugby, except where the players are wrapped up warm so they don't get hurt by the nasty men on the other team ;) and they're spoon fed how they're supposed to play by the coach. It's a very American sport, simple to play and simple to understand. But still makes for good entertainment.

Woah, we have thumbs?!

I just typed ( N ) ASCAR (meaning the pointless European attempt at NASCAR which runs at all of about 1 track). I suppose it worked either way though.

I think I'd disagree with that!! That would be the same as an American saying football is simple, as all you do is kick the ball in the net! Having only watched it for a couple of years, I'm still learning loads of new stuff, and think its definitely more tactical than most other sports I know... And it's certainly more interesting than watching a rich Russian buy a team, and a whole squad of new players, and become the best team around!

And to be honest its probably got more stupid rules than most English sports combined! I'm not saying this is a good thing, but it definitely doesn't make it simple to understand!

If I can get to the game I'd definitely go, and I reckon theres probably a bigger fan base here in the UK than most think! (Y)

You may laugh at the fact that they wear pads and helmets, but these guys are larger then any typical Rugby and Soccer player. If you ever seen it live they are massive. If you are 6ft tall and weighed 280lbs you would be considered a "small" linemen.

As far as speed is concerned, watched the size of the defensive line and how fast they are. A majority run under 4.5 sec/40yds sprints. They are unbelievable athletes that need protection from certain death.:)
