I first played Enduro on the Atari when I was 5, but that doesn't count ;).

I'd have to say... Super Monaco GP, my cousin had it for the Genesis in 1993 and I loved it! But on my own it started with F1 Challenge for the Sega Saturn in 1996, a very limited game but very fun, it actually had visible tire wear!

Then GP2 in 1998, which I was addicted to, and I guess that's when I really started, but I never really got hardcore, even nowadays. Actually I very, very, very rarely ever play any F1 games, basically because GP4 is annoying and F1C bothers me.

If we're talking about racing games in general, then i would probably have been about 6 years old or something playing Continental Circus on the spectrum.

Proper simming started off with Indy 500 on the amiga in '93, shortly followed by very many hours on GP1. GP1 was the main catalyst for buying the amiga in the first place :D

Had a few other racing games on the amiga like nigel mansells etc but not what i'd class as sims. I then bought a copy of GP2 BEFORE i had my first PC! I used to take it to school and play it on a PC in the english teachers' offices (we used to produce a school magazine on the pc).

Then came my first PC, and many joysticks were wrecked playing GP2, followed by PC no 2 and GP3. Played GP3 for a long time, and then kinda didn't really do much sim racing for a bit, then GP4 came out. And then I discovered NR2003 and became hooked since.

Joined Vader Trophy and VTR in June '05 and consequently pretty much only drive GPL, GTP and NR2003 now.

Obviously various other racing games have interspersed those, such as the NFS series and too many others to mention, but not really what i'd deem as sims.

started on 'pole position' long ago. apart from the odd kick it wasn't too moddable.
then stayed away until about 2000 when pc's and the internet were invented and i got GP3 cheap. and then i discovered gpg and gp3 took off. then reluctantly got gp4.
tried the f1c and rf demos but gp4 is enough for me :)

Indy 500 was my first game, I loved the crashes and replays! :) Every time you hit a car you spun around something stupid. The funny this is, it took me a full 2 years before I relaised I could change the car setup, and actually got a decent qualifying position.

The it was GP1, where I changed some names around and stuff, but my first modding was done on GP2, around 1998-1999.

Turbo Racing (NES) -> Nigel Mansell's F1 World Championship (SNES) -> Indy 500 (PC) -> Indycar Racing (PC) -> GP2 -> GP3 -> GP3-2000 -> GP4 -> rFactor.

Things have come a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way since the early 90s!

Ooooh, let's see.

Grand Prix World Circuit (GP1 - Amiga 500) -> Nigel Mansell's Racing (amiga) -> Stunt Car Racer -> GP2 -> GP3.

Then I got bored. Don't play any racing games (or really any games except PS2) anymore :(

Got GP2 in 1997. Kinda gave it up last October though. Just don't have the time anymore, with painting, internetising, music and sports.
Ooh Stunts!!!! great! That was my second game after Need for Speed 1. Then Stunts and Colin McRae Rally 1-2. I first played with a sim in 1996 or 97. I didn't have GP2, just GP3 about in 2000 and 2001. And GP4 since 2002.
I'm modding GP4 since early 2005. (long career isn't it?)
Now GTR, GP4, F1C, rFactor, RBR.

Naturally bought gp3 and 4 - still on gp4 ;) too skint to try out rf and now my graphics cards dead :(

GP2 Christmas 1995

First modding of game was not until 1998

Jenson drives it like he owns it; Lewis drives it like he stole it
wow what a great thread, its very interesting how alot of us have had the same expericances with "sims" when growing up.

Well Here is my contribution.

I originaly played Nigel mansell's F1 on the SNES at a friends place, then i saw it at a store, and asked if i could have it, my parents agreed but asked the guy serving us if it was good etc, this guy is a legend. he bought out F1GP, and convinced my parents to buy that instead.

WOW

You have no idea how many hours i have driven on F1GP, i think i won it on every difficulty on 100% race distances.

My cousin managed to get me a copy of INDYCAR RACING one, which i STILL have a copy of :D and i played that alot aswell, i remember painting cars for that, making my own penske car (as paul tracy drove for penske i made my own car based on his), it was awsome. I also got a copy of NASCAR 1, sadly i only really got into the Superspeedway races, never bristol or anything, pretty much all i did was drive Talladega. I remember once i did a 500 mile race at talladega, and i decided that since the qualifying setup was faster i would use that instead of the race setup. I think i was out by lap 50 or so.

GP2 came out, and i was hooked on F1 again, So many mods for that game, so many wonderfull tracks. GP2 had some of the greatest fictional tracks i can remember so many races, so much fun, i did heaps of driving in GP2, i even got a Steering wheel for GP2, in those days when i told my friends i had a steering wheel for PC they were in awe! it was great.

GP3 was good, but it felt like GP2 with more features to me, i got into it yeah, but not as much as GP2 or F1GP, just did heaps of pick up races, no championship series or anything.

GP4 came out and again the same as GP3, didnt do much with it, played alot of quickraces et but nothing serious, Started up the gpgames hotlap comp which was alot of fun back in the day

I then stoped playing games as my steering wheel died (@#$%& YOU THRUSTMASTER)

i got back into it when ellis and sim started VT:Ovals, well I had read the VT race reports, and I wanted in. so i found a copy of NR2003 in england, purchased it and it arrived.

the best purchase i have ever made

NR2003 has helped me so much in my driving skillz, i would say its the game that made me where i am, i love the standard game, the Nascar part, i love the GTP mod, its got awsome tracks awsome physics and it just rules! :D

One game i forgot to mention is NETKAR.

NETKAR is a stunning little game, and i am awating the release of Netkar Pro whch will be even better than NETKAR.

so in summary, i started racing when i was around 8 or so i think, and im now 22... so thats 14 years.

:D

awsome.

My first racing game was continental circus on the Commodore 64 back in 1990...i was 6!!

Then had a bit of a drought on the computer front, i had something to do with F1 on the Master System, wasn't particularly good lol...

I got my first PC in 1996, and bought GP1 almost immediately, and even though it looked crap it was still great!!! GP1Edit was great!!

I played GP2 around 97/98 (i was into champ man in those days) on a friends computer, but didn't actually buy it until i think 2000...modded it slightly for my own use...

I then got GP3 when it came out and got into editing that but never released anything...

I got GP4 pretty much as soon as it came out and still play it, i've released a few things for this :)

I have GPL and enjoy it greatly, however i am nowhere near good enough to race online; I have NR2002 but rarely play it.

At the moment i'm playing rFactor a lot. I have done some skins for it but only released them amongst my league guys - it's great fun online and i enjoy it immensely!!

Also owned every game in the CMR series and i have RBR....

In between all this i went to the dark side and haf F1 98 through 2001 on PSX (my brother has gone up to 2005 lol) as well as F1C on the pc....

Happy racing days!

Thought I was the only person to ever play this game never mind it being someone else's first racing game also.
On a somewhat related note, my first stockcar game was Days of Thunder for the NES ;) (thankfully I didn't own that, just borowed it... I think)

oh wow Chris... i started out the same way. Total Exhaust all the way baby! God i spent shed laods of hours playing that thing, it was awsome. I still have it somewhere. After that there were many ps1 "F1" games. Which aren't really simis ^^.

Then i got my first computer, and the first game i got was F1 2000. And after that i got all the EA sports F1 games and finally GP4. And that's the last F1 game i've baught. I havea few other racing games but i haven't played them as much as i've played the F1 games.
