that rapid bonus thing is bollox really. why pay for only 9 months cover to get 1 more year of no-claims 3 months earlier than you would anyway, when you could get a 12-month premium for not much more than the 9 month one? if they quote you for 9 months, always ask them what it would be for 12 months too, so you can compare their offer with others.

yes but you only pay for 9months insurance. if the 12 month price is £120 then 9 months on the rapid bonus will cost you £90. it just means you insurance is only 9months in length then you have to renew. i think its beneficial for new drivers like me. ive been passed a year now and am one month away from collecting my 1 year NCD. i am driving some fairly old and not valuable cars so it maes sense to build up the NCD on these "old" cars quick before i buy a "proper" car by which time i should have say 4 years NCD rather than say 3 on the conventional 12 months insurance. and you cant do it past 20 years old.

when i take out a new insuraance policy in one months time, i will have i year NCD. When i renew my insurance again after that, in a years time, am i able to use that first NCD or has that "been used up"?

how do you mean "and you cant do it past 20 years old"?

i'm 24 and one company offered the 9 months thing to me.

you will have 1 years NCB, but technically you only have driven for 9 months, so its a bit "fake".

your NCB's build up, so i have 3 years so far, so if i haven't claimed by the next time i renew, it will be 4 years, and so on.

i don't get what you mean by "used up".

they factor the bonus into your premium when you give them all your details. it's not like a voucher where they tell you the amount, then you "cash in" you NCB to bring it down.

i don't know what you mean by "use" the ncb/ncd.

if you drive for 5 years and don't crash and/or claim, you will have 5 years ncd/ncb, so when you ring up for a quote, you tell them "i have 5 years ncb", so they factor that into their calculations and tell you the premium they want to offer you.

when you're 29, you won't say "can i use the ncb i got when i was 24" etc.

they don't get "used" unless you make an insurance claim, so if you claim, you drop down to zero, unless they're "protected" which you can only do after you have 5 years worth, so then if you claim, you stay on 5, instead of dropping down to 0.

yeah, that's why it's called a "no claim discount/bonus", because they're supposed to lower your premium because you didn't claim, and the more years you have, the cheaper your insurance will get because it sort of proves you are a safe driver because you have not claimed.

that's why the 9 month policy doesn't seem like a good idea to me, because even though you are able to say "i have 1 years ncb", you haven't in reality, because your policy was only 9 months and not 12.

so you have to weigh up the options, to see if the 9 month policy, calculated up to 12 months, is cheaper than a standard 12 month one from someone else.

say it was £900 for 9 months, but £1000 for 12 months from somewhere else, the 12 month one is financially better for you, as you get 3 months more than the other one, for only £100 more.

but it's up to you how quickly you want the extra year ncb. if you really can't wait 3 more months, then go for the 9 month one, but it just seems like a bit of a scam to me, in an attempt to lure younger drivers to their company, when in fact they are getting conned because the policy for 9 months could be the same price as a 12 months one from another company.

i've actually got my sribblings on a notepad with my quotes from December '05 here. from RAC, they had the Rapid Bonus Scheme, £545 for 9 months. i asked what it was for 12 months, he said £707.

i finally got a premium of £568 from another compnay, for 12 months.

so for only £23 more, i got 3 months more cover.

so you can see, if you shop around, you'll eventually find a 12 month premium that can be not so much more than a 9 month rapid bonus scheme.
