Ok a little bit over the top i know, but its another sad day for British culture, when the famous routemaster bus is no longer apart of Londons identity.

The Routemaster bus is as famous a landmark in London as is tower bridge, houses of parliment, big ben etc.

LONDON - After half a century, London's red Routemaster buses are rattling into retirement. Thousands of fans said farewell to the hop-on, hop-off buses Thursday, the last full day of regular service for the icon that has been the subject of thousands of tourists' photographs and postcards.

Transport authorities are withdrawing the blunt-nosed double-decker from its last route

Gotta keep up with the times. The newer buses are operated by one person, are more disabled-friendly, are quieter and more efficient.

I'm sure they won't really be missed that much. Who misses the horse and cart?

:(

Its a sad day indeed. The West End just won't look quite the same. The new buses have no soul, no character at all. I think it says something when these buses have lasted 50 years, while the new ones are removed every 5. Great cost saving Mr Livingstone!

I'm sure he uses the buses every day..oh wait, he has chaufeurs for that!

Now that's a silly analogy. Big Ben is just as useful now as it always was. The buses, on the other hand, have gradually become less useful.

Big Ben is all about tradition. It has been around since 1854. How long have the Routemaster buses been in service? 50 years. And they had reached the end of their working life. A digital clock on the face of Big Ben will not be any easier to read than the current clockface. However, the buses are to be replaced with newer, better, faster, cleaner devices...all round better.

Anyway, Big Ben is a worldwide icon. Routemaster buses are not.

I disagree,

If you were to ask people in the street to name a few things that you'd associate with London, the red double decker buses of old would be near the top of the list

Its all part of the image of London, black cabs, beef eaters , buckingham palace, trafalger square etc.

When ever you see London depicted in movies it nearly always features a famous big red double decker bus.

Its a national treasure that been put out to pasture unfortunatly.

Who cares tbh...its just a bus....its get you from A to B and tbh on a cold day i prefer the warmer, cleaner newer versions than a cold, dirty old one.

Most of us prefer being warm, dry, in a quieter, nicer enviroment, rather than having big red buses tbh.

Whilst i like these routemaster buses, there hardly important.

And more importantly, they're hardly practical. No one misses the horse and cart and not many people miss the steam train.

Whilst your quite right that in the great scheme of things they're not important, its another british institution thats being eroded away, abit similar to when the traditional red phoneboxes were taken away.

Its little things like this that go unnoticed and sooner or later you end up wondering whats happened to the heritage/identity of your coutntry.

Before you know it all the little things that makes up Britain will be gone and we'll look like america with all the characterless things.

Anyway your all entitled to your opinions and likewise so am i :)
