Arthur Clarke denied the IBM/HAL thing, but he was lying out of his arse, blatantly

Kubrick was very lucky that HAL software was not built by Microsoft....

it means its expensive, and if you break it, you have to pay with your life.

Yes, this is a common complaint due to the lack of big explosions in rythmn to some rock music, however it was actually scientifically correct, because in space, there are no noises.

Amazing film. Visually its incredible, the models used are brilliant! Coceptually its amazing because it was made in 1968, BEFORE man had been to the moon. And Lopper's right, the silence is what makes this film so great. Every other space film I've seen is full of bloody american voices spouting bollocks at the top of their lungs while something blows up loudly in the background. Space is silent.

Actually the film's depiction of the sheer size of space is what it does best - its just huge, and no other film I've seen has shown that at all.

Like Vader said HAL =IBM

A rumour about that was that during the filming of 2001 Kubrick had some sort of legal tete au tete with IBM over one thing or another and he chose the next best thing.

He took the previous letter in alphabet from IBM thus making HAL

@ LS

Arthur C Clarke wrote the book for Kubrick to film, and was published before filming began, so HAL is Clarke's invention - which he claims was coincidence. Yeah right. Anyway, it's not Kubicks best film - Clockwork Orange is

Well in fairness Kubrick played a very strong role in the book's writing. Google search it, they wrote it very much as a joint venture of ideas.

I'm split between 2001 and A clockwork orange. I think 2001 takes it. It just annoys me that Kubrick never once explains why its called a clockwork orange - the book the film is based on does, and if you didn't know the book then you havent a hope in hell of knowing the significance of the title. Grrr.

Clockwork orange and Dr. Stangelove are my all time favourite movies, imo better than 2001.

Aah, forgot How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb - Sellars at his best. The Heil Hitler scene towards the end is still funny today

The Shining is also a really good psychological horror. Its funny, there's always a certain 'look' to Kubrick's films, something that reminds me of a hospital; a lot of bare, stark walls and sets. In that sense, as well as script and style wise, I always think One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest was a Kubrick film - its also got that slow burning thing going too.

I havent seen that yet, prolly get round to it at some point though. Full Metal Jacket was a little dissappointing in some ways, but all his films require you to pretty much be "wtf?!" first time around then "WOAH!" second time :)
