I have no doubt there is intelligent life out there, but like some of us have said, it's very unlikely we'd ever make contact due to distances.

But I also believe there is a higher chance that we are being watched. There's the whole theory of bending space to shorten the distance. It could be possible, look at black holes for example. Theories say that passing matter through bent space may be impossible, but it leaves a strong possibility of viewing through it. It may be possible we are being watched from mllions of light years away, but they can see us here in the year 2005.

Worth a thought. :)

I have doubts that there's life out there, let alone intelligent life.

Human life has come about due to a variety of castrophes is true, however on other planets, other castastrophes could lead to different life forms. That it seems so amazing that humans could emerge after all this, that we were destined to come about, only seems so amazing if you rule out the possibilty of any life emerging on Earth if these events had occurred. The discovery of life forms near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (i think) living in a world without sunlight, living in huge quantities of sulpher from lava flowing out through the gap between the plates, indeed depending on the sulphur, blew open the possibilities of the boundaries of life.

While I am not outruling the possibility of "life" in space, I say it might not be so common as we tend to believe. Furthermore we need a proper definition of "life" before we discuss if it's out there. If we apply the usual definition of life other catastrophes will not have lead to "life" as we define it, since carbon-based life needs exactly the kind of catastrophes Earth went through - a different set of events, a different sequence or a different time schedule would have made life as we know it impossible.

If you say other catastrophes may have lead to different life forms you are thus extending the concept of "life". We now have to ask ourselves íf a) these life forms are really "alive" in the true sense of the word and b) if we would recognize them as life forms in the first place. Maybe they are so different that we wouldn't regard them as life forms anyway, so the discussion if there was life out there or not would be completely irrelevant.

Thats exactly what i'm saying, we look on life as something that will always be similar to us. But it is more than likely very different.

But if it's so diferent that a) our concept of "life" does not apply and b) we wouldn't even recognize it as "life" it wouldn't make any difference if it existed or not whatsoever. If something has no influence on us and cannot even be perceived by us discussing it is futile. After all the concept of "life" is not an absolute or objective category (unless you are a Platonist), it is a human concept, a definition made by us. If something does not fulfill the premises imposed by this definition it cannot be subsumed under that concept. That's why I said the universe is probably not full of "life" as some people want us to believe.
