Who here plays guitar?

I used to play a lot, hardly at all now.

back in '93 when I started high school when I was 11, we got a new music teacher and she started guitar classes, so I and a few others joined and learnt the basics. then my mate joined and we were the only 2 to carry on playing for the entire 5 year period of high school.

we hooked up with one of our maths teachers who was very good, and everyday at lunchtime, we'd have our lunch then go to the maths teachers room and play guitar monday-thursday, and on fridays we were allowed to use the music studio and the elctric guitars, so fridays used to be our jam sessions.

we also used to play in the school band and provide musical entertainment for presentation evenings and pantomimes and stuff.

we learnt some classical tunes (no theory, all practical) from the maths teacher, as well as stuff like The Beatles and some Dire Straits. at one presentation evening we played Sultans Of Swing, with the teacher on bass and vocals, and me and my mate playing the electric guitars for the rest of the song.

but since we left school we played less and less, and I hardly play at all now.

my mate was very into the effects pedals and bought a few, and has a couple of guitars, while i only have a nylon-stringed spanish guitar 'borrowed' from school (I left school 7 years ago, still haven't given it back ;)) and a 'Tanglewood' electric guitar which I bought from Cash Converters back in '98. it has the basic look of a Fender Strat, with red body, white scratchplate and light brown fretboard.

I've been playing for about 3 and a half years. Got 3 or 4 cheap guitars and I'm not very technically proficient, though I am in a band.

Hi guys, long time no see! So long, in fact, that I forgot my old password and had to create a new user name.

When I got a new computer, I sort of put gp3 aside and went back to my other passion, guitar playing!

Here's a little pic of my electrics.

I bought the Ibanez Les Paul Copy on the left in 1976 when I was 16.
The others (all Ibanez) are a 540Radius, 540SaberLTD, and an RG1520GK. I love those Wizard necks.
I also have a Takamine Limited Edtion 2000 acoustic.

Here's something I wrote, played, and recorded some time ago:

Just right-click and "Save Target as".

I'd like to hear some stuff that you guys play! Zcott, what have you been up to lately? I'd love to hear some of your jazz playing!

Later,
Larry O'Meara

Nice song by the way, fits together very nicely even the solos which i often get annoyed with when people spoil songs with em

hey Larry, your song 'Native Angel' sounds very much inspired by the Top Gun theme by Steve Stevens.

I can just see a plane taking off from an aircraft carrier in the distance...

Man, you guys scared me! I thought I had inadvertently copied someone else's work. Then I went and found that song, and was relieved that the only similarity was the overall feel of the song. You guys must be big Top Gun fans.

not really a big fan of the film, but like the theme song/music.

and you've never heard it before? never seen Top Gun?

I started watching the movie once but found everything about it so cliché that I couldn't bear watching the rest of it. And I have heard the song before but couldn't remember it off-hand. In trying to remember the "Top Gun" tune, the melody of "Chariots of Fire" kept popping into my head, similar tempo and similar-sounding but not identical chord progression. Fans of that movie would probably make that connection. Who knows, maybe they did unconsciously influence my tune. There are a million things that influence the creative process, musical and not.
