I am a big fan of David Cronenberg. I am also a big fan of William S. Burroughs, though I am strictly hetero. Naked Lunch is one of the best adoptions of a novel ever.

odysee 2001

all kevin smith movies (i.e. dogma)

all i've seen with appearance of kateshi kitano (zatoichi-the blind samurai
and izo were the most recent i saw)

all peter jackson movies (especially meet the feebles, but he's top notch in general)

then there is one from nicholas roeg, starring david bowie which is called the man who fell from the sky(which is a translation of the german title and i don't know if that's the original title)

apocalypse now

paranoia 1.0

then i also like movies that are so bad they make you laugh a lot, most commonly called "trash", kinda ;)

hehe, that one made me think about his movies. :)
he definately used his (let's say) "splatter"-knowledge
to make lord of the rings good (i.e. orks) apart from
his very good general movie making skills (i.e. heavenly creatures).

He just should have shot Elijah Wood on the spot. WTF - according to the book Frodo is already 50 years old. Even if Hobbits slightly live longer than humans and the Ring kept him young, Frodo definately was not a teenager with google eyes as if he suffered from obstipation. Apart from that the LoTR movies are pure class.

lol, that's a good point. but anyway for a mainstream project
jackson did incredibly well (as you mentioned "pure class";),
especially with this novel so much could have been done wrong.

another thing referring to my first post here (little bit up
the page): i mentionend 2001_a space odyssey (got the correct
spelling this time :) ), i forgot to add john carpenter's dark
star which i maybe like even more, especially because it was
soooo low budget.

last, there is "beat" takeshi kitano misspelled (embarassed) and
another excellent movie with him in it i've seen yesterday, called
battle royale.

Maybe we should turn this into a Top Ten Directors/movie makers thread?

David Cronenberg
David Lynch
John Carpenter
Peter Jackson
Joel Coen
Terry Gilliam
Clive Barker
Ridley Scott
Helge Schneider
some other random guy tomake the list complete. :p

Hmm - all contemporary directors/movie makers. Maybe we need anothersection for classic stuuf. I also love the old Film Moire classics and of course old Japanese SciFi movies.

Why no Spielberg/Lucas? The old Star Wars movies were great, however, the best were not directed by Lucas. GL is a good story teller but a lousy director. Spielberg has done some good movies, but I think the others on my list are way better.

***EDIT***

Just corrected a big mistake. The second Hellraiser was of course "Hellbound" and not "Hellboy". Stupid me. I'd also have to add the first Alien movie. Aliens II was a good SciFi action movie and I would have loved it if they called it something else, however compared to the original Alien it is pants.

In terms of German movies the best ever made is "00 Schneider - Jagd auf Nihil Baxter", closely followed by "Texas - Doc Snyder hält die Welt in Atem" und "Praxis Doktor Hasenbein.

@ LS - Constantine??!! God that was imo, the worst film I've seen this year. Reeves once again shows us how to act wooden, and still keep getting work.

I've seen it...

Was OK the first time I saw it, but found it a bit boring the second time. Not bad though.

Constantine was made more complicated than it needed to be :S

Due to the voting system in Germany, Governments are always made up of coalitions of different parties. At the last election, an almost unprecidented result saw the CDU/CSU (rough equivilant of the Conservatives) go into Government with the SPD (rough equivilant of Labour)
