But nowadays you can get extra speed into Radillion as the modern cars can stay on the left hand side over the kerbs.

In comparision where there is a hill and no run off in GPL so you can't carry too much speed there.

it makes the new spa seem really quite pathetic. unfortunatly despite the gloriousness of old spa, in a new f1 car it wouldn't probably be that sepcial bcause of the straights. i think someone once worked out the f2002 would only lift off the throttle twice a lap (Stavelot and la source)

I'd like to see ANY car take the old Malmedy flatout ;)

It's not so much the radious of the corners, rather the height differnce in the track.

new F1 car would probably take to the air at Malmedy. If it was flat it cud take it easily, but not with its current hills

there was a nice helicopter shot of Eau Rouge/Radillon too, showing the elevation change.

can someone please email the Spa and Nurburgring pics, because for some reason i can only see the top of each pic.

thanks in advance.

they take Blancemont and Eau rouge flat now because of the modern high grip tarmac, grooves on dry tyres and the cars lower centre of gravity.

Apparently the papy version of Malmady is pretty inaccurate, I think in reality it was a lot tighter and the track was narrower (rest of the track was also narrower, goes somewhere to explain why Clarks pole time was 3m 28.100s when in GPL a 3m14 can be done comfortably by the really fast guys)

Well the Papy Eau Rouge is very very wrong. I would say about 2 seconds of the time is made up with how wrong it is there

It's well known that the entire Spa track is way off the 67 version of the track, but apparently the GPL version of Malmedy was from a version of the track at some point, but I don't know if it was before or after 67. I remember it from that ENORMOUS thread John Basara started when announcing he was making a totally rebuilt Spa. I read that thing in it's entirity - brilliant read.

Was still being posted on a week or 2 back IIRC.

Look in here, an interesting discussion about Eau Rouge with the old era and the mdern era.

Thats actually a very interesting read, good post :)

It is pretty clear to see Eau Rouge has got easier over the years, and something that I picked out

"An equally significant step was made in 2002, when not only did the tyres develop further, but the corners where slightly realigned and also resurfaced, in the interests of safety."

Does this mean they basically made the corner less sharp, therefore faster but safer because the cars would actually be less on edge as they could take it flat?

If so, I wish they'd stop. Eau Rouge is probably the only truly great big balls corner left, or one that I know of anyway.

130R apparently still requires more room in the trousers department too, even after it's reprofile.

Wow!! Never realised how long the old track was! :o

Some of the changes to the tracks are better though. At Imola, the new Acque Minerale is much better than the old one with a chicane at the first right.

yeah I agree with that acque minerale is a great corner now.

I think Silverstone is a case of, the other tracks have changed, Silverstone hasn't. In the 90s, it was known as a medium/fast track. Now it's known as a fast track, and even the drivers say Copse and Bridge are great corners. They always were, but I still think they stand out a lot more now.

On the subject of Spa, it seems they are trying to get more racing there, with a proposed short, national and test circuit comming soon.

Short:

National:

Test:

i think thats because in 94 they tightened the corners, but opened them back up in 97, when it was originally changed it was hailed as a great track, and the changes in 94 diluted that a bit, but its always been one of the fastest and best tracks on the calender, or so say the drivers, a real drivers track, despite the complex
