Ya, i hate that, everybody is expected to act to what some famous person thinks is cool. Thats why Nirvana were going to call Nevermind "Sheep", it was a slag at the mindless MTV generation. And if you try to be different you are laughed at. But i don't care. I'm still the only male over 10 that wears shorts in North Munster. Cept for the skater/surfers down the road in Boher, who seem to have and endless supply of weird and wicked shorts....
Anyways, when i am making music, i often just take the best bits of songs that i've heard, the bits i really like, they could be anything from Thrash Metal to Traditional Irish, and put them into the music that i create.
Every song i try to make it different. I can understand why some bands would have a good formula for one song, so they might try to do something similar for the next. But that makes music monotonous.
This is why I don't like metal bands like AC/DC or Megadeath, to name two random bands that i have listened to. I find that the that its the same thing over and over, and that its always L-O-U-D. Now i don't mind loud music, but there is a power in quiet too. And thats why I love Nirvana. The next track will always be different. Metallica too can have some quiet songs mixed in the roar.
