Unless I'm mistaken that was merely an unfounded rumour, otherwise it only applies if you buy the Upgrade version, in which case the license you buy is the equivalent to the license you had, so if you had the OEM license (as comes with PCs or is the cheaper option), you will retain the OEM license - if you had the full retail license, you'll get that.

The same upgrade applies to XP anyway, so it makes no difference if you have Vista or not.

It's normally cheaper to just buy another OEM license of the next operating system unless you have the full retail license and want to retain the flexibility it provides.

OT but while we are on the subject of W7, can it be installed over the top of Vista, or do I have to muck about backing everything up and format?

It's always better to "muck about backing everything up", even if you were to reinstall over the same OS.

But yes, you can do an in-place upgrade from Vista to 7... though of course you should do a full backup anyway, as it's quite possible the upgrade will fail.

For the record, you can't upgrade from XP to 7, though the license allows you to, you'll have to do a fresh install.

The apparent release candidate has leaked a good week early. General public will (legally) be able to get their hands on it on May 5th.

I think I'll hang in there and wait for a final retail.
