GPGSL British Grand Prix - Silverstone
Race Day - Part OneSo here we are at last, it's race day! The drivers and teams have been too busy watching the Olympics in London to be bothered with racing. With some threats from the GPGSLRS to throw their collective toys out their pram, the teams relented and decided to take to the track.
With Ed Greenhalgh having clinched the World Drivers Championship, runners-up position was still up for grabs. Marko Aleksander, Ruben Greidanus and John Warrington are all vying for second in the WDC and are all in top 4 grid slots with John Maverick on pole.
There is also the small matter of the final of GPGSL Champions League to be decided too. Aston Martin Racing take on Team Shadow Subaru. AMR being in their 2nd consecutive final having lost to ScalaGP last season, but TSS hold the higher positions on the grid.
So lets go trackside for the start of the race as Maverick leads the drivers to their grid slots.
And we are away! Maverick holds on to the lead.
The two Shadows press the MPR man for the lead.
Greenhalgh has made one place to 6th.
Heading for Stowe for the first time and Greidanus looks to the outside of Maverick for the lead. Warrington also looks to pass Aleksander.
Warrington fails to get past Aleksander and Horváth nips past him into 4th.
Maverick survives but he's defending in the Vale from the Dutchman.
Greidanus still piling the pressure on Maverick. Will he buckle?
Elleker goes for an excursion in the countryside.
Rejoins the fray in 18th.
Greenhalgh goes fastest on the first lap.
Standings after one lap.
Horváth uses his team boost to good effect and takes 3rd from Aleksander.
Maverick and Gredanus in 1st and 2nd.
Hunsley slips onto the grass and spears towards the track, this could be very nasty.
Elleker become an innocent victim in Hunsley's accident.
Sheppard runs wide into the kitty litter.
Greidanus is fastest after 2 laps.
Horváth still 3rd but is closely followed by Warrington. Which means JW passed Aleksander for 4th unseen by the numpty cameramen.
After a great qualifying session, Thomas seems to be falling back fast.
That isn't going to help his cause however.
The Aussie rejoins the track down in 19th position.
Fellow Aussie Sheppard close behind in effectively last place.
Maybe not for long as Somogyi takes the long way round.
Greidanus going for the lead of the race.
Takes fastest lap and the lead!
Again missed by the camera's Aleksander has lost a place to Greenhalgh.
The AMR's squabble over 4th place. Champions League latest: AMR 17 TSS 22
Despite his team boost Horváth is losing ground to Maverick.
Johnson makes a mistake at Woodcote.
Looks like the throttle stuck or he got lead in his right boot.
35 laps to go. (GPGCL: AMR 17 TSS 22) (WDC: 1.EGR-177 2.RGR-132 3.ALE-126 4.WAR-124)
Warrington slows on the Hangar Straight.
Suspension failure! Has that put paid to Aston Martin's chances of winning the Champions League? It certainly ends Warrington's chances of taking the runners-up spot in the WDC.
Vilela becomes the latest victim of the Luffield sandtrap.
Greidanus is pulling out a gap on Maverick.
Rodríguez dives down the inside of Nell.
The ScalaGP man holds him off though.
Vilela then takes advantage of Rodríguez being held up to dive to the inside of his team mate.
Whats happened to Horváth? He's already been passed by Greenhalgh and now Aleksander pulls out to overtake.
And he's past!
The Hungarian seems to be slowing!
He is going so slow he is shoved into a spin by Jalving, but he is out of the race due to a brake problem.
Vilela tries to put Nell off his stroke, but it's just not working.
Greenhalgh now in 2rd is catching Maverick slightly.
Vilela still persevering.
And it pays off.
30 laps to go.
Stay tuned for part two.
