GP2 Manager - 2005: Silverstone Free Practice & Qualification Results PG36 - Searching for a new manager!

Posted by Reve-san
Just to infrom you Reve, from now on instead of Rosberg, I want Briscoe participating in all future Practice sessions until further notice.
Racing Engineering
Was really pleased with Lopez's form in practice, and if we can have a bit of that speed in the race then we might be okay.
Testing showed that Barcelona doesn't really suit our car, but I don't think it helped that perhaps we went the wrong way on setup for qualifying after the feedback from Benoit.

Let's hope for a better showing when the race results are posted up next week.

Dissapointing results for both drivers
Hey guys. I´m sorry, I won´t upload race 1 coverage today. I had to work as a workmate good sick yesterday, so I couldn´t finish it today. Furthermore my girlfriend is gonna come over now, so I won´t have the time for it. But I swear, both coverages will be up tomorrow, even if I have to work on it the whole day :)
See ya tomorrow :)
Maybe you'll find it strange but I hope my team had disastrous time at any race you upload tomorrow. See you later and have a nice evening :)

PS I'm becoming jealous of your g-friend ;) :-)

Mogotron Takes Over at Sauber

After the previous team manager at Sauber Captinfranko decided to step down due to other commitments this left Sauber boss-less for the second time in two seasons. Luckily however they today announced that they have successful hired the manager of the GP2 team iSport International Mogotron in the hope that he will be able to turn the teams fortunes around.
Catalunya Feature Race
Welcome everybody to the 2005 Catalunya Feature Race. Yesterdays Qualifying saw Super Nova lock the front row with Nico Rosberg starting from Pole Position today. With no rain forecast, let´s hope for a good and fair race.

All five lights are on - The race will start any moment now.

And we´re off.

Rosberg and Carroll staid in front, while Lyons and Wurz switched places.

And logically Rosberg drives the fastest lap, as Bruni tries to overtake Monfardini for 5th

Behind them are Wirdheim and Ide as well as the two Camps cars, fighting each other

And oh my god! Bernoldi and Prémat touched!

Both are spinning!

And rejoining last.

First lap done - let´s have a look at the standings.

Wirdheim is challenging Monfardini for 6th!

And he gets through.

And what´s that?! Kovalainen and Vilander touched, both are off track.

Kovalainen rolled back on the field, and Ryan Sharp drove right into him!

Kovalainen lost his rear wing, while Sharp lost his front left wheel! This race seems to be over for both drivers.

Well the Finn is driving on, but still he has to pit.

I nearly forgot about Vilander. Well he´s in last position now.

Back at the top Bruni is challenging Wurz for 4th position.

But we get cut off.

While back here Montagny is challenging Monfardini for 8th.

But he isn´t getting through.

Kovalainen is now pitting.

Rosberg drives the fastest lap.

Only to have it beaten by Bruni right after.

Forget that, Kobayashi drove the fastest lap now.

It seems like Montagny got past Monfardini, who now has to defend his 9th position against Paffett.

And he´s staying in front.

But at the beginning of the new lap Paffett is getting him.

And here we have Toni Vilander, lonely driving in 20th position. Only Kovalainen is behind.

And Bruni challenges Lyons for 3rd position!

Can he make it?

Yes! Bruni is now in 3rd position! Very strong performance until now!

Meanwhile Rosberg is leading the race. Let´s hope if he can finish the race this time.

And Monfardini has to defend his position once more. Gene is the one looking to overtake him this time.

But Monfardini stays in 10th. Still no good performance from him today.

While his teammate Bruni is driving a very strong race so far.

33 laps to go, and Super Nova Racing is still leading the race with a 1 & 2.

Kobayashi has already gotten into 14th position and he is now looking to overtake Piquet Jr. for 13th.

But we get cut off to leading man Nico Rosberg.

Well he didn´t get through, as Piquet is still defending his position.

But Kobayashi isn´t giving up.

And he gets through.

Now López is trying to overtake Piquet as well.

But Piquet is able to defend his position.

Bruni has already gotten 0.6 seconds behind Carroll. Will he be able to get 2nd as well?

Prémat is pitting really early. Is this planned, due to the collision earlier, or a bit of both?

While his teammate is driving in 10th position - only 2 more positions and he will score the first points for his team.

With 30 laps to go, let´s have a look at the standings.

Kobayashi is now challenging Sergio Hernández for 12th!

And Hernández runs a bit too wide, Kobayashi gets through!

He lost some time through that mistake.

Bruni challenges Carroll! Will he get through?

Yes, he does!

Coloni Motorsport driver Gianmaria Bruni is now 2nd after starting 5th.

While Carroll lost a place.

And Lopez is now challenging Hernandez for 14th

But we get cut off again.

Well he´s trying again.

But Hernández defends his position.

And he brakes wrong while getting back to the good side.

Still López can´t benefit from this.

Kamui Kobayashi climbed up to Monfardini! Will he make it?

Yes, he does!

While teammate Lopez is still stuck behind Hernández.

While there are still 24 laps to go, Bruni is 1 second behind Rosberg. Could he be able to get him as well?

And the same try again.

But López just can´t find his way past Hernandez.

And with 22 laps to go, Carroll pits.

As do some other drivers as well

Marc Gene comes out in 16th position after his pit-stop.

But he is driving slow and Vilander overtakes him.

What the? Gene is driving off the track!

And he crashed into the wall and lost his front wheel. That´s the end to his race.

One lap later Wirdheim is pitting

While Rosberg hasn´t pitted yet.

Some other drivers are getting into the pit as well now.

Rosberg is one of them.

Let´s see how long his stop takes.

11.9 seconds. Thats pretty good. And he comes out in 3rd position.

While Bruni fell back to 5th. I think he lost a place.

López now is attacking Piquet once more.

But he can´t find his way through.

Monfardini, who was 1st for one round is coming in now.

And now Vilander comes in as well and Nico Rosberg claims back his 1st position.

And Piquet is attacking López this time!

But López can stay in front.

With everyone having pitted once, let´s have a look at the standings again.

Alexandre Prémat is 14th after his very early pit stop, 2 seconds in front of Hernández

Kovalainen opens the third and probably last round of pit-stops.

And here is the confirmation of what I said earlier: Bruni fell back behind Adam Carroll.

But Bruni is trying to overtake him!

I don´t think he´ll make it...

Well... we have to wait to see the results, as the regie cut off to Nico Rosberg once more.

López and Kobayashi made really good progress in this race: While López came from 20th to 10th, Kobayashi emerged

from 21st to 9th. One more position and he is in the points!

Oh, but whats that? López is running way too wide!

How many positions will he loose?

This is looking close!

Nothing happened, but now Hernandez is trying to overtake him is well!

And he´s through! López is now stuck behind is old friend Hernández. Seems like he missed him...

And he is right away trying to overtake him again.

Could this be it?!

He passed him! López was able to overtake Hernández with no problem, after beeing stuck behind him for nearly half

of the race!

Meanwhile Bruni is still stuck behind Carroll. 16 laps to go - who will get 2nd?

Or first, if Rosberg´s engine blows up again...

Bruni is trying it.

But Carroll stays in front.

Meanwhile Montagny is driving in 12th position... And if I see it right Prémat is trying to overtake him.

He is, and it seems like he is getting through.

Prémat got through. He is now back in the position he started.

But he pits!

Well then, let´s have a look at the standings again.

And Carroll has to defend his position against Bruni again.

And this is close!

But... what of it, we´re cut off again.

After all it seems like we didn´t miss an overtake.

Will we see it this time?

No, Bruni stays behind. Profiteur of this situation is Lyons, who is only 0.6 seconds off Bruni.

While back here Robert Doornbos is challenging Hernández for 14th.

And he got through.

And Alexandré Prémat is driving the fastest lap! Well he has the freshest tyres and noone in front of him, so he could get at least this one point.

But back to the battle between Bruni and Carroll - A battle for 8 points.

Well Carroll is still able to defend his position.

And now Hernández is running wide!

He gets back at position 17. Even though he couldn´t have scored points, it still puts him in a bad light.

Prémat is meanwhile driving another fastest lap. He really wants this one point.

He wants it like nothing else it seems.

Gianmaria Bruni is trying it again.

But Adam Carroll is doing his job really good

Rosberg meanwhile is driving 6.6 seconds infront of Carroll. He will pretty surely win this race.

7 laps to go, let´s have another look at the standings.

Bruni is trying again.

But he again is not getting through.

While in the back Yuji Ide is trying to overtake his teammate.

But it seems like Wirdheim staid in front, while Bruni is once more trying to overtake Rosberg.

Yuji Ide is trying it again as well.

And Carroll is braking wrong!

But I think he didn´t get through.

Indeed, he didn´t. But Yuji Ide passed Wirdheim!

4 laps to go. Carroll made a mistake in the last lap, is he getting nervous? Bruni is after all trying it again and again.

But he is still not getting through.

He won´t give up that easily

Neither does Carroll.

But Carroll is braking wrong again, while Richard Lyons now closed the gap.

And while Carroll again has to defend his position, Ide overtook Alexander Wurz!

And Carroll again managed to defend his position. Only 2 laps to go.

And Kamui Kobayashi is challenging Paffett for 8th! If he gets past him, he will start from pole tomorrow, after

starting in the last row today!

And he got through! Awesome performance by young japanese Kamui Kobayashi!

Oh, and Carroll was braking wrong again, and Bruni overtook him!

Gianmaria Bruni finally got past him into 2nd position. Very sad for Super Nova Racing, but awesome for Coloni Motorsport!

And what´s that?! Toni Vilanders car is smoking. Or is it water?

Whatever it was, it leads to him beeing out of the race now.

Nico Rosberg meanwhile enters the last lap.

And it seems like Paffett got past Kobayashi again! Who will start from pole tomorrow?

Only a few turns more and Nico Rosberg wins his first GP2-Series race after not finishing in both Imola races.

Not far to go...

And Nico Rosberg wins the first race of Catalunya! Congratulations!

Gianmaria Bruni comes in 2nd, after an awesome battle against Carroll for most of the race.

Adam Carroll gets 3rd. Even though 2nd position was in, still a good result for him and Super Nova Racing.

Richard Lyons is 4th, while Yuji Ide comes in 5th.

i

Wurz comes in in 6th postion, after driving a silend race.

Wirdheim comes in 7th. Again both ART Williams cars are getting points.

And Gary Paffett comes in 8th. He will start from pole in tomorrows sprint race.

Kobayashi sadly only managed 9th. Still he showed a great performance.

Coloni Motorsport

A great performance from Bruni to score our first points. We're just a little disappointed with losing out to Carroll at the pit stops. If it had gone better, Bruni might've challenged Rosberg. Monfardini seemed to go the opposite way to his team mate, but we hope for a better performance from him in the sprint race.

Joseph Gilson :: Southern Cross Racing :: Race Driver
ART Williams

5th and 7th is a good finish. I had hoped for a little bit more, but at least this gives us relatively good starting positions for the sprint race, too. Super Nova Racing, however, will be hard to beat this weekend. I think of them being by far the strongest contender this season if their engine holds. And unfortunately it looks like they have solved their engine problems. Well, let's see how the sprint race goes, then I can give more answers to that.

GPGSL : Team Owner of 'Maverick Track Performance' (MTP)
Catalunya Sprint Race
Welcome everybode to the Sprint Race here in Catalunya. Today Gary Paffett of iSport International, a team currently without manager, will

start from pole. Let´s see how the race will go.

All five lights are on - the race will start any moment now.

And we´re off.

Björn Wirdheim had a bad start and Alexander Wurz is immediately in second position.

Alexander Wurz had a brilliant start and is now 1st! Can he keep up this place?

Well Paffett strikes back and now they are head to head right into turn 6.

And Wurz wins. Wurz stays in the lead.

Björn Wirdheim overtakes Paffett as well!

It seems like Ide and Bruni have to break hard due to Paffett and Wirdheim fighting for 2nd position.

Lyons runs wide!

And he spins! He´ll now have to wait to rejoin last.

Carroll makes profit of this, by now beeing 6th.

And Wurz drives the fastest lap.

Both ART Williams drivers now have to defend their position, as Paffett and Bruni are challenging them.

Ooohh, Bruni runs wide, this will open the door for Super Nova!

And indeed, both drivers are getting through.

Kamui Kobayashi tries to get past him as well.

And he gets through

After so much action, let´s have a look at the standings.

While there got a little gap between the first 4 drivers, Adam Carroll is right behind Ide. He´ll probably try to overtake him.

And he´s not only trying, but succeeding. In the background Bruni is also challenging Kobayashi.

But Kobayashi manages to stay in front.

These are the drivers who are looking to score points at the moment: Wurz - Paffett - Wirdheim - Carroll - Ide - Rosberg

Carroll is now driving a defensive line as Ide isn´t looking to give up his old position.

And Richard Lyons, who is driving a lonely race at the back of the field, drives a fastest lap.

And Ide passed Carroll off-screen! Ide now back in 4th!

Giorgio Pantano ran a little wide back there.

Lopez and Sharp already made use of that, and Vilander is looking to do the same.

And he got through as well while Gene is passing Hernandez.

Kovalainen back here is challenging Bernoldi.

And I think he´ll do it.

While Lopez fails to defend himself against Sharp.

Back at the top, nothing happened.

Some Standings again.

Prémat trys to overtake Vilander without success.

A few laps later he got past Vilander and is now looking to overtake Doornbos.

And he gets through.

We are back at the top, where Yuji Ide is close to his teammate Wirdheim.

Both drivers a showing a good performance, but the fight against your teammate is one of the most important in this series.

And now Ide challenges Wirdheim!

And he´s through! Ide overtakes Wirdheim!

Back there Doornbos is looking to get his old position back from Prémat, while his teammate challenges Vilander.

And I think both drivers will get through.

No, Prémat stays in front of Doornbos.

Kovalainen didn´t succeed either, but Doornbos is already trying again.

And again he doesn´t get through.

Lyons catched up to the end of the field and is now challenging Pantano a bit hard.

As a result Pantano runs wide.

And Hernandez passes him.

He is now last.

Meanwhile Ide is 3rd again but it doesn´t seem like he is getting closer.

20 laps to go - let´s look at the standings again.

Pantano tries to overtake Hernandez.

And he gets through. The least thing he can do, while his teammate is 2nd.

Speaking of him, he is only 1.3 seconds behind Wurz. One mistake and Paffett would lead again.

It definitely needs a mistake, as Paffett can´t get closer.

And Vilander is overtaking Doornbos, who seems to have lost a position to teammate Kovalainen off-screen.

And Vilander is getting through without big problems.

But Doornbos got his position back, while Kovalainen is challenging Prémat.

But Prémat defends his position.

Still Kovalainen is not giving up that easily.

And yet Prémat defends his position.

Lyons meanwhile tries to overtake Vilander.

But he doesn´t need to, as Vilander is driving into the pits! Could there be a problem to his car?

Ops, Prémat ran a bit wide and Kovalainen immediately overtook him.

This little mistake has cost him a lot of time.

Doornbos is now trying to overtake him as well.

But Prémat is able to defend his position.

Kovalainen trys it again!

Prémat isn´t giving up, and I still stays 17th.

More than half of the race is done - let´s see the standings again.

Doornbos still not giving up.

While Lyons is challenging Pantano.

2 fights at the back of the field. Let´s see who wins.

This could be it this time for Doorbnos.

As well as Lyons.

But we´ll have to wait for the result, as the regie cuts off again.

And Toni Vilander is driving a fastest lap! It´s the same as Prémat in the last race... has this been planned?

He drives the fastest laptime again.

While his teammate Montagny has to fight against Gene. Will Gene enter the top 10?

He does! Marc Gene now 10th.

And now both Doornbos and Lyons are trying to overtake Prémat!

Lyons has to forfeit, while Doornbos has a realistic chance to overtake him!

And he gets through!

Now Lyons is challenging Prémat.

But Prémat manages to stay in front of him.

Meanwhile Carroll is getting closer to Wirdheim.

While Kamui Kobayashi is kind of close to Nico Rosberg. Will he be able to score a point this time?

Well these two won´t get points, but still they will fight.

As I said. Montagny challenges Gene for 10th.

And he gets through.

Well after all Gene is beating Prémat, who is driving in 19th position.

And now Pantano is trying to overtake him as well.

And Prémat is running wide! Pantano passed him and Hernandez is quickly coming closer.

Prémat now fell back to 21st position.

1.2 seconds behind Hernandez.

While Ide starts closing the gap to Paffett!

And Carroll challenges Wirdheim for 4th!

But what´s that?! We´ll get cut off! Damn it regie!

Well then let´s the the standings... Carroll passed Wirdheim!

And Wurz enters the last lap. If he makes no mistakes now, he´ll win this race.

Only one turn left.

And Alexander Wurz from Red Bull Racing Junior wins the Sprint Race of Catalunya!

Gary Paffett comes in 2nd after starting from pole.

Yuji Ide finishes 3rd, just like in Imola.

Adam Carroll comes in 4th after starting 7th.

Björn Wirdheim couldn´t drive strong enought, but still saves some points for him and ART Williams.

While Feature Race Winner Nico Rosberg finishes 6th and scores the last point.

There's a mistake in the standings, Kovalainen has 12 points.

Very dissapointing weekend, we hope for better results in the next races

Thanks, I fixed that :)

Btw, I don´t know if you are all following the F1 Thread, but what are you thinking of multi-year contracts?

Pro: You can sign young talents, let them drive Test Sessions and a few races in the first year and then use them as #1 or #2 drivers in the next season
Contra: GP2-Series Champions are not allowed to race in it. So if one of your multi-year drivers becomes champion, you suddenly have to find a replacement for him (even though you´ll probably already have a Plan B)

Thats just one pro and contra each, there are some more on both sides.
I'm for multi-year contracts
I vote for it. Although i think that we should be allowed to sign only 1 and 2-year contracts. 3 year is too long for GP2.

As for the race - we showed we can be fast, but we didn't materialize that with some more points. Being the last team in overall standings isn't where we'd like to be. However, when we took this team we had it was clear that nobody had worked hard there for some weeks and we had to reorganize. As you can see - we're becoming faster and faster every race. Good think is that our strategy with Premat worked - it was clear he can't get to 8th place, but with some fresh tires he could at least get that point. What is more pleasant is that Gene finally feels suitably in his cockpit. Further press release will be given later as I've just returned from an exam and now I'll have to travel some 350 kilometers...
I am extremely happy with the results from the sprint race, even though Carroll lost 2nd place, I'm still very happy! Sprint race could have gone better though.
Also happy that Nico is getting the appropriate air time. Thank you director!
Red Bull Racing Junior Press Release

DELIGHTED! It sums up our weekend, overjoyed at Wurz for getting our first win in GP2, meaning we have beaten our season objective of just the podium. Well done to everyone at the team.

Bernoldi will need to get on the pace very quickly, as we are very worried by his lack of form and pace.

Wurz and Bernoldi will drive the practice at the next GP.

GPGSL
Christel VXR: S12 onwards | Wins: 3 | Poles: 3 | Fastest Laps: 2
And I think one or two year contracts only, so if your driver does win the title, you only have one year of finding someone, whereas with 3 years, you have 2 years without a driver you wanted so to speak

________________________________________________________________
GPGSL
Christel VXR: S12 onwards | Wins: 3 | Poles: 3 | Fastest Laps: 2
ART Williams

We're delighted with Ide's performance but not so glad about Wirdheim's performance. But we won't criticize him too much yet, as he showed a brilliant first race. We still think, that we have one of the best driver lineups next to Super Nova Racing.

As for multi-year contracts: I've already written in the F1 thread that I'm pro multi-year contracts. However, I agree with Deyan that 3 year contracts are too long for GP2, while they're perfectly fine for F1.
2 year contracts for GP2 is good AND...only real GP2 drivers can be signed for more than one year. F1 testdrivers who additionally start in the GP2 can only be loaned for one year and then have to be re-loaned for the next season if they stay testdriver.

Example:
Bjorn Wirdheim hypothetically gets another 3 year contract at Williams and stays testdriver. ART-Williams nevertheless can loan him for one year only and has to re-loan him for the next season if they want to keep him
Mathias Lauda, however, who is a real GP2 driver, can get a full 2 year contract with ART-Williams.

Problem 1: What happens when a driver has a valid contract but isn't allowed to drive GP2 anymore for whatever reason?
Answer: Bad luck for the team, the contract becomes invalid and has to look for another driver next season

Problem 2: A F1 team wants a GP2 driver that is still bound to a GP2 team, but the GP2 team doesn't want to give the driver free. What now?
Answer: The GP2 team has a valid contract and can decide not to sell the driver. If, however, the F1 team pays 33 % more than the regular price for this driver would be for the following season, the GP2 team will have to let the driver go for this price. F1 teams, however, should be asked to give such offers as early as possible during the remaining season already, to give the GP2 manager enough time and opportunity to look for another driver.
Exception: A partnered F1 team can, of course, take the GP2 driver at any time to the conditions negotiated in the partner contract

Problem 3: Can contracts be extended before they run out?
Answer: No. After the 2 year contract has run out, the driver will automatically get on the market and everybody can give offers for the driver at the next driver market round.

So, this is basically how I think the whole thing could work. Of course this is open for discussion.

A great performance from Kamui in the feature race, which could have resulted in points and sprint pole.
We've analysed everything from qualifying and the race and we think we've worked out why qualifying was such a disaster.
We clearly have the pace to consistently score points and we could win some races if we can get the setup reward sorted.

The line up for the next race (and practice sessions) will be Kobayashi and Lopez.
I'm not really in favour of multi year contracts, but it would be good if the current team had a chance to resign the driver before he is released on the open market.
