During a race, whenever an information graphic appears on screen (example: "Ralph Schumacher is in the pits" or "Riding with Jacques Villeneuve"
the game slows down incredibly. As soon as the graphic disappears, the game speeds up again, almost as if it breaks free, and there is a surge of speed.
This problem seems to be predominantly at Spa more so than any other track. It's hard to believe that with the abundance and quality of graphics in this game, one little line of text could have this kind of impact on frame rate or processor occupancy.
Graphics details were calibrated by the game itself during install (22 FPS with most details on) Game runs great during a practice (fast, smooth) and a little slower during a race when there is a congestion of cars in the area, but nothing like the problem mentioned above.
Any help would be much appreciated.

80 gb hard drive @ 7200rpm
256 mb Ram
64 mb nvidia geforce 2 mx/mx400 video card
GP4 patch version 9.6 installed

This is a well known and documented issue (in fact at least since Gp3)
Use GpxPatch (if you don't use it anyway, there is no reason wh you shouldn't) and disable sky messages (it's in the GpxSAT tab).

deactivate the tv style grafics in f1grafics.cfg
deactivate sky messages also.
And - main - deactivate true type fonts in f1grafics.cfg.
Sometimes - it doesnt matter if ttfonts are enabled or not - gp4 dont show tt fonts. Sometimes it shows. I think thats a or the problem why pc slows down. I had a better avpoup to 15 %) only with that way.
But its not possible to show your cpu with pressing "o" key. If you would know what your avpo is - save a lap and show it with hofxlap.
For TV Style Timings GPxPatch is best.
P.S. And yeah the problem is an old known from gp3.
