Say I have lod 0,1,2,3 and 4 for a car.
Then how do I know which lod the car uses in the game?
I mean, can I delete lod 0,1,2,3 and keep only lod 4 without causing any problem to the game?
Only Pedro's mods use lod 0 for all cars, else the game crashes,no other mod has this feature.

If you want to run only 1 lod in your cars.wad, delete lod1, lod2, lod3, lod4. The game uses Lod0 the majority of the time. The other lods are for keeping the PO low. I dont understand why people dont use them. I need to use them as I run it on a laptop but my po rarely goes over 40-50% at 40 fps.

Dont delete lod0.

You will ALWAYS need lod_0, this is the most detailed lod of the carshapes
If you want to run on lower lods you will have to rename them as 0, with teameditor you can set a option for GP4 to only use lod_0, 1-4 then can be deleted
If this is not enabled you will always need lod_0 to lod_4

LOD (Level of Details) is part of rendering technique adapted by Direct3D engine to "simulate" textures to be viewed from different distance of views. This technique help the 3D graphics to display the proper look of textures degradation to smoothening their appearance. If a texture rendered without LOD sequence, we might lost the "smooth" feel because the texture are shrinking only by dithering methods, which is faster (optimized for real-time rendering) but takes cost in quality. With LODs, texture designers allow to generate texture sequences that already pre-fined e.g. using better dithering or using smooth filtering. Just imagine if a 1024x1024 texture rendered to 10x10 part on the screen. LODs also help improving framerates while rendering objects at the farther distance.

You are 100% right maikel but be careful before to rename lod1,2,3 or 4 as lod0.

for a car done using "GP4 standart", lod1, 2 and 3 don't have "z_cockpit" objects and lod4 has just 1 object named "cockpit_low", so take account missing objects they can't be used directly as lod0 which ask the presence of all objects.

If I set the option use lod_4 only in globalvars, will the cars use lod_4 in the game?

if you use only lod4, you won't noticed any correct car ingame, because this is the lowest lod without any details for the shape

then should I use lod_3?

;)
Here's the rule for LOD texture:
LOD 0 = mandatory
LOD 1 = optional, require LOD 0
LOD 2 = optional, require LOD 1
LOD 3 = optional, require LOD 2
LOD 4 = optional, require LOD 3
