You cannot talk about normal TVs if you do not specify which standards you are talking about:
- NTSC, used in North and Central America and Japan
- PAL, a German-invented system used in most of Europe, Africa, Australia, and South America
- SECAM, used in France (its inventor), eastern Europe, and Russia
NTSC ("National Television System Committee" - some unkind people rather say it stands for "Never The Same Color"
has 525 lines of resolution to the picture, whereas PAL (Phase Alternating Lines) has 625 plus an improved color system to get more consistent hues. SECAM ("Systeme Electronique Couleur Avec Memoire"
originally reached 900 lines in black and white. In colour, however, they reduced the resolution to 625 lines as well.
