Extremely long loading times

Hi!

I would like to know what do the loading times depend on?

My out-of-box GP4 loads quite fast it needs about 15 seconds, but with my new 2009 CSM mod it takes more than 1 minute (!) to load a track - even a free practice session on which there's only one car. It doesn't matter which track I use (original or new hi res tracks).

In spite of this when it does load in it works quite well at around 30-36 fps.

What can I do to lower the loading times?

I saw that almost every 2009 car, helmet and tyre is hi res so I made a standard res version (I don't want a low res because after taking a look into the original cars.wad I saw that low res equals with the resolution of the original hi_*.tex files). But it is just slightly better it's still around 1 minute.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Oh and as for specs: 1.5 Ghz Intel Centrino Duo, nVidia GeForce 8400 G 256 Mb, 2 Gb DDR, Windows Vista Home Premium. I guess it is a pretty old configuration and Vista hurts even more.

Thanks in advance,

Atticus.

Make sure that in the f1graphic.cfg file this line is set on 1. This will make the loading 25x faster if it isn't set on 1.

Out of the box the cars.wad is only 23 mb. When you upgrade to 2009 for example my wad is over the 400 mb so that makes the loading longer but when its set on 1 it only takes 10 seconds with my pc which is two years old already.

Check this line:

1 ; Full 32bit textures

Might be a slight over exaggeration. But, it is a must anyways. Allows you to tweak the game so much and squeeze every last drop out of it.

Open the f1graphics.cfg in Notepad BTW.

The Flanker is gone. :(

Wow!! Thank you very much. It works like a charm now.

Well not 25x but maybe 10-15 times faster now.

I have tweaked f1graphics.cfg before (I mean I have the first line on 1 and set the visor filters and the anisotropic filtering etc.) but I thought this would slow down the game. As it turned out it's exactly the opposite.

Thanks again.

Okay I have tested your solution extensively and it gave this very strange result.

First loading is fast approx. 30 seconds and is independent from track, then from then on it's still slow like hell (2 minutes average!).

Strange.

Yeahh very old ! and not very good gp4 either.
My sugesttion try to get at least a Nvidea 8600 card but
if you can afford more go with the Ati 4850 witch is
cheap and very powerful.

Cheers :)

Well,i have a Phenom 9500.
In GPXPatch,if i set to use only one CPU the track loads slowly,if i set to use all the 4 CPUs it loads pretty fast!

I also have it turned to use only one processor because it is said to cause less CTD I believe. I might just try out the 'All' option. Trial and error. :)

Yes selecting All does cause CTD's usually unfortunately.

im suprised no one has suggested this but if you want faster loading times you need more memory especially for Vista. 2 Gb's is mostly being used by the OS with vista.

I'm going to change to Windows 7 ASAP. But I will want to use the localized (I'm Hungarian) final version which is only due in October I think.

It is believed to use less memory than Vista.

The 2gb is not the problem, The problem is the very bad
video card he has. nVidia 8400gs is the worst directx 10 video card
available, now sum it up with vista and his pc is not good for any good games
at least not the new ones. And with Gp4 its so hungry for CPU, Ram and Video its worst for him actually for the newer cars and tracks that have too much Polys.

Kind regards
JC

EDIT: I would like to add also that Windows Vista consumes around 20 - 25% more of resources than Windows Xp.
