Help With WAD Files

Im having some problems with WAD files. Ive downloaded some graphic enhancements but I cant get them to work. When I compile the WAD file and load GP4 and then load a track the progress bar gets about a 1/4 of the way and the game crashes.

This is what I am doing:

1. Load GP4 Master 1.1 beta
2. Load cars.wad
3. Extract cars.wad to a temp dir
4. Goto Tex workshop
5. Load the Tex file I am gonna change
6. Replace with new file
7. Click 'downsample'
8. Save Tex file
9. Go back to WAD workshop
10. Create WAD from dir
11. Give it the path to my folder where I extracted everything too and the path the GP4\cars.wad so it'll replace the file

Everything seems to work fine in the compiling, but like I said GP4 will crash when I load a track.

Any ideas would be most appriciated

What size is your new wad file, it should be 22.5mb some times it comes out as 0mb or 4mb, delete these and run through the last process again

9. Go back to WAD workshop
10. Create WAD from dir
11. Give it the path to my folder where I extracted then type cars.wad so it'll replace the file

The file it creates is the same size as the old one so it seems to work right.

The updates I am using are:

New TC and LC steering wheel lights
Updated Bridgestone and Michelin tyre textures
Alex Younge helmet update

Has anybody else tried installed these?

its probably the tex files then, why do u need to click downsample?

just:

extract cars.wad
copy the downloaded tex file to the folder (or is the downloaded file a tga?)
click compile wad

play gp4

The downloaded files are all TGA.

By the way, is the a reason why they are TGA?

Sometimes I can get the TGAs to work in the game much easier than getting TEXs to work. I've only once had a problem with the tga files crashing the game, but everytime i try to import a tex file, it always crashes.

Yeah same here. I hope when it comes to Ralf's carset we don't have to rely on the tex installation, cos otherwise it will crash.

No, Ralph will make a really easy installer program, hopefully! We'll just have to wait about 4 years for it!

By the way, is the a reason why they are TGA?

They are TGA files because bitmaps don't support transparency, apparently.

gp4master uses tga files because thats how he decompresses them, and converts them. im going to atempt bitmaps, if they work, then thats great, if not then its TGAs for me :(

im going to atempt bitmaps

You can try but I dont think they will work as well because (like mentioned above) they dont support transparency.

Just though, what about TIFF?

TGAs support 32bit : that is, they can include an alpha channel.

Newer bitmap formats do this too (I believe) but I'm guessing
there's not much support yet in editing packages.

The alpha channel in the car liveries is used for gloss mapping :
it controls strength of specular/environment reflections.

Good News:

Download the latest version of GP4 Master and it will work fine. If you look at whats been fixed it mentions building a WAD from a directory. I tried it out and it works fine, GP4 doesnt crash.

Goto the top of this thread and see the list of what I was doing. It more or less describes the process you take.

Its hard to describe exactly what you have todo without knowing which files you are attempting to replace.
