Hi.
I've checked a few things regarding performance in GP4 and I think the results are quite strange.
My spec:
AMD 2100+
1 GB PC 333 DDR RAM
ASUS GF4 -TI4600 (driver: 29.42)
SB Audigy
80 GB 7200 WD disk

(All result are with max settings in GP4)
Results with hardware 3D sound acceleration:

No FSAA: 4xS FSAA:

800x600 : 26FPS 26FPS
1024x768 : 26FPS 26FPS
1280x1024: 27FPS 26FPS
1600x1200: 27FPS 23FPS

Results with hardware 3D sound acceleration DISABLED:

No FSAA: 4xS FSAA:

800x600 : 37FPS 36FPS
1024x768 : 36FPS 37FPS
1280x1024: 36FPS 36FPS
1600x1200: 37FPS 28FPS

Results with hardware 3D sound acceleration DISABLED and gfx OC'd to 325/729:

1280x1024: 36FPS
1600x1200: 35FPS (!!!)

My personal comment must be that the HW Sound accel. is very demanding, and that this must be fixed asap.
But these results are strange, you'll notice that the FPS is the same in every resolution, with or without 4xS FSAA! The only exception is the 1600 res with FSAA, but even that one reach "normal" FPS when overclocking the graphics card! The 1280 resulution does not gain anything from this overclocking. Can it be the CPU that is the bottleneck here?

Comments?

BTW: The OC'd results are with 3xS FSAA!

Forgot to mention that...

same here... better performance without hw sound accelaeration. i think this bug is already mentioned in morbids collection...

I get strange results too - I wonder how accurate the test is in Graphics setup ? Run the same middle settings test several times and varies 24 - 27 fps - NOT conclusive !

I "only" have 1GHz PIII GE3 SBLive 512MB (much better than GP4 recommended spec though) but get same fps 25-26 with 640x480 ALL AT MINIMUM and 1280x1024 MAXED OUT !
3D Sound OFF on my pc gives me 27fps on ANY setting.

In the game 640x480 min looks like GP2 did on my old 486DX4 laptop !

1280x1024 MAXED looks like "The Poodles Underparts" and doesn't seem noticeably slower (BUT STILL VERY SLOW - at times speedo says 200mph - looks like 85 MPH in my '87 3dr Cossie !

I bought F12002 today and played 1 hour - eye candy doesn't look so good IMHO but it is FAST on 1GHZ GE3 setup MAXED OUT at 1280x1024.

Anybody else tried running with wheel off and using keyboard ? On my pc it looks 50MPH faster at Silverstone and PO drops from 100-120 with Guillemot FF wheel on straight down to 70-80 PO with keyboard.

Could this be another drain like the 3D Acceleration problem ??

I think a wheel will take up quite some amount of CPU power, I use a Logitech Formula Force wheel myself. back in the old days, when using a joystick, the flight sims got much slower when hooking up my flightstick. Todays sticks/wheels are mostly USB, but even USB peripherals need CPU cycles to function.

BTW:

I OC'd my CPU to 1,82 Ghz (from 1,73 Ghz) to check whether the constant FPS of 36/37 would change. The result: Now I got a constant 38/39 FPS in all resolutions.
I'm not saying 38/39 FPS in 1600x1200 with everything maxed out and with 4xS FSAA is bad, it's just that I can't believe that this game is so dependent on something else!
Can someone that owns a P4 2.0 GHz or above tell me their FPS, I wonder if GP4 is running better on P4 that Athlons...

I have a P4 2.0 with 256 ddr and G3 ti200.

Noticed that with 1280x1024 res and almost everything on I get about 35 fps. But when driving a race PO rises up to 130-150 and the game slows down. When setting down fps to 26 (other settings as above) PO is 105 at the start and below 100 after that. Seems to me that that the calibration
"promises" too much fps.

For now I,m happy with this. Game runs well without slowing down. Maybe an upgrade to G4 ti600 does the trick....

Rgds,

I haven't thought about that the calibration may be unaccurate. But I guess the PO -meter isn't accurate either, since the FPS changes alot during calibration if you press and hold the PO-key.

If the patch fixed the sound accel. problem this is good in two ways:
The sound card processor can then take care of the sound processing and the CPU will then have more power for other tasks!
Say the processor used 5 % cpu for sound, these 5 % can then be used to do other important tasks.

The auto calibration sux! It wants my system to run with almost everything switched on and @ 60FPS!! Needless to say, I have few moments with PO under 200 at these settings. If you are looking for a good configuration, then try this instead.

Decide on a FPS level you want to have. Then adjust you settings manually and run the "Test" feature in the advanced GFX menu. Remember that the first test in any session of GP4 will always be worse than all the others. So every time you start GP4, discard the first test. Also, as

It's only after we've lost everything, that we are free to do anything.

Not sure about wheel CPU usage, but I do have a few issues with my Formula force wheel. Just want to know if anyone else has these problems:
* Wheel snaps to the right for no reason - intermittent
* Change up is not reliable - gears will some times change up twice, other times it requires two pulls to change up.

Has any one else had similar problems ?

I found this site with some mods for the Logitech wheels. Have not tried them yet, but will as soon as I get a squash ball.

i run it in 800 x 600 mode with every detail switched off, down the bare bones.

if you squint your eyes it almost looks like F1GP :-)

i run it at 800*600 with everything off (for a laugh) and it went in fast forword!!!!!!!!!!!!! :';(

the Po was at about 20-50% (gp3 never went fast forward)
