GP4 crashes freezes and hangs on new machine

I recently decided to get back into GP4 as a bit of free time was coming my way. I installed it as usual, downloaded the official patch and copied the decrypted GP4.exe then installed GPx patch. Even before doing each of those things GP4 would randomly crash, either back to desktop or terminally, requiring a restart. The crashes tend to happen in a few select cases:

*fatal crash when pressing esc, most often when viewing another driver (yes this also happens with GPx patch in debug mode)

*fatal hang when rewinding replay with f5, sometimes when fast-forwarding

*crash to desktop at completely random times during a race, pressing throttle/brakes - it doesn't matter

My system is as follows:
GIGABYTE 965P-DS3
Intel E6600
2gb 800Mhz Corsair dominator (non OCd)
Nvidia 8600GTS
Windows XP SP2
no RAID

Try 'set the exe' to Windows 98 compatibility. (right click and set the properties)
