Hiya
Recently purchased Grand Prix 4, tried running on my laptop and now my main unit.
Pentium 4,
Nvidia card GeForce MX 420
Sound: realtek '97.

The game just won't load and just crashes with no explanation.

Anyone help? I've installed the most upto date drivers, have 1gb of ram ,64mb for the video card.

Thanks

could you give us more details... are you running xp or vista?

do you see anything on the screen? or do you just see a black screen then it crashes back to desktop?

I suggest... don't install any mod yet.

1. uninstall/reinstall GP4
2. use the official patch
3. try with a no cd .exe

if it still fails, disable your sound card first and restart. then try running the game. so we could isolate the sound card or sound driver from interfering with the game.

Done all that, but still the same.
goes to a black screen for a few seconds, then back to desktop.

I installed the official patch, then a no-cd patch.
Also disabled the sound adapter.

I get this message in the debug file: this comes up several times
could this be the problem?

then it's most probably not related to sound.

It could be caused by your video adapter. Keep the sound adapter disabled.
Then lower your video acceleration.

control panel> display> settings> advanced> troubleshoot

move the slider to the far left. Let's see if it works.

If it still fails, try removing the the video driver, and use default windows driver(if it exist/works for your video card). this one's a long shot but it might help us figure it out.

what driver version are you using?

Tried everything...still the same.
This is why I gave up with PC games years ago...

Got any other ideas? I haven't a clue.
Shame that infogames etc don't offer tech support!

I am running Direct X 9.0 (4.09.0000.0904) is this ok?

Your directX should be ok. but also try installing/re-installing ver.9c(november2007). just might work.

I'm almost out of ideas, but here's some you might want to explore...

1. turn off hyper threading (if your proc. has it)

2. could be a software conflict. try turning off non essential programs and services in msconfig. ex. antivirus, antispyware, etc.

3. try using gpxpatch and select "skip intro" and "skip start menu". I think the GP4 intro starts with a Bink video. If Bink is the problem, skipping it might work.

4. disable any form of shadowing in bios ( another long shot, but worth trying, just set it back if it does not help)

5. if your running with two sticks of RAM, try removing one and use just one or the other. I've had problems before with GP4 and some slightly unstable RAM sticks. you could also isolate some potential problems with dual channel RAM configuration by doing this.

6. last... if you're up to it, you can try playing with RAM timing in bios. set it to more conservative numbers(higher numbers). just make sure to take note of your current settings in case you need to set it back.

good luck.

Download and install the latest realtek driver package and the latest Nvidia drivers for your MX420 if you haven't already. No overclocking enabled.
Uninstall the printer and re-test, from memory, there's a printer known to cause a conflict, sorry, cannot remember which one.
Right click gp4.exe, set compatibility mode to 98/ME and re-test.
For all tests, set gpx_patch to run GP4 in debug mode, set verbosity to medium, set cpu to 0 then re-test again set to 1.
Post the full error log here, then edit/add to the topic header (gpx-patch error log) so we can see it has been posted.
Can you run Battlefield? Call of Duty? Put it this way, what can you run successfully? Get back to us.

actually, this is no longer a problem with the latest gpxpatch, so don't bother with the printer.

I'm getting the same problem with GP4 - the quick black screen and then a crash to desktop. In fact, I get exactly the same problem with GP3, as well! I've posted in the GP3 forum about it. I thought I'd dig out GP4 after failing to get GP3 to work (I make my own personal carsets in GP3, so I prefer to use that) - but lo and behold, it hasn't worked either. I've had BOTH games running on similar laptops (IBM thinkpad) but with lower spec than this one in the past - it's all very strange...

Thanks for the info, I actually got to callibrate the graphics...but then it crashed whilst doing that!

I was able to run call of duty (original game). Haven't bought the more recent ones.

Here's the log file.
