Well, as you told, vRay is a slow render plugin, compared with the results of Brazil, which you have demonstrated that this plugin is awesome too. I advice only one thing: Never use Maxwell... LOOL.
Well, Also I make a lot of test renders with lower quality image sampler and a lots of quality settings put in low, so a render in lo quality takes me about a minute. So I can test zillion times before turn the HDR, the image sampler, the camera settings... but I think a 5 Render hour worth it, when this is not my longest one (I've made one that took 23 hours... LOOOOL).
Lastest thing, I think you must try another light source. I can't remember now the Brazil ones, but if you choice Spotlight, I think you have to review settings in order not to produce this perfect-shaped shadow and the light is not bright. Once I turned a spotlight into a vRay-Light style in Brazil, only touching million times the settings.
