I'd like to have a go at painting my own helmet, but not really sure what to do.

I tried taking one of the tex files from a cars wad, converting it to tga and then editing it in photoshop, but it looks transparent when I open it.
Am I doing it right?

Any other advice or pointers for a newbie painter would be much appreciated!

i suggest you to use helmet templates as base for your helmet.
Arai GP5-RC's template is available in the pack released by MDBSnake;-)

for the "look trasparent" do you mean that you see the helmet shape but no texs on it?
if so,there's a problem with your texs names.Generally they should be "Driver1_1.tga" and "Driver1_2.tga".

1) Where can I find MDBSnake's template?

2) The problem isn't ingame, it's when I open the tga file in photoshop. I've disabled the transparent grid, and now it's workable.

Okay - worked out how to do this now
I was missing texresizer, which is now converting the tga files into tex files

I saved my template as a .tga but when I go to zmodeler to view it, there are no .tga files to view????
I'm very confused???/

Thanks for any help

you can see the textures in the 3d view(right-bottom view)

if the shape it's white anyway you should to materials editor and assigning textures manually

Hey bazza_racer,
Paolo (senna9194) is right, but to explain that a bit more in detail:
In ZModeler press button "E" to open the material editor. At the top end of this new window you can choose which part of the object (in your case the helmet) you want to manually assign a texture to.
Choose "driver1_1.tga" and then press - a bit downwards - on the button next to "Primary texture". Choose the related texture in the browser and assign it. Do the same with the "driver2_2.tga" and you're done.
Hope this was helpful

here's my first attempt at a helmet. Jack Bauer themed

Any suggestions on making it less shiny and more matt? Is it an Alpha layers thing?
I don't really understand those!
