problems with microsoft gamepad

i'm having problems with gp4 not recognising the controls on my xbox360 controller. i use that as it's the best gamepad on the market atm and is really comfy for long gaming sessions. however, i simply cannot get it work using anything but the left stick for steering and acceleration/braking.

when i run the calibration i can use the left and right triggers for setting the acceleration/braking calibration, but it always defaults back to the left stick for everything once the game begins. i've tried to edit it manually from the advanced section but everything is locked and i can't change the settings.

this is my system and what's installed for gp4:

gp4 with latest patch
using the zaztools stuff to get everything up and running
2006 mod + latest update
gp4 is launched using the CSM proggy
xbox 360 controller with the wireless receiver
vista 64 ultimate with 8 gigs ram
9600GT

everything is working fine apart from the controller. i've even got it running on my hdtv with no problems. it's just that it's pretty uncomfortable using the one thumb for everything.

anyone had a similar problem and came up with a solution?

edit: i should add that the joypad works perfectly with all other games.
