Hi, have this topic in another thread but felt I needed to advertise a little more as I am desperate for feedback. I have just spent £2500 quid building my dream PC to run my favourite game - GP4. This is my spec:

Gigabyte SINXP1394 M/B
Pentium 4 3.06ghz Running at 3.4ghz (600mhz FSB)
1gb dual channel DDR Ram, PC3200.
Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb
Serial ATA Hdd 120gb
Soundblaster Audigy
Force Feedback Wheel

Windows XP SP1
DirectX 9

Basically GP4 runs at 50fps at 1280x1024 at FULL detail. But only for a few minutes before either exiting to the desktop or freezing my machine requiring a restart. I have NO problems with other games or with things like running 3d mark, so I'm pretty sure its not an overheating problem. Plus I have some VERY heavy duty cooling in my case. I have tried the following to no avail:

Disabling Hyper Threading
Underclocking AGP and CPU
Lowering Graphics Detail
Using Compatibility Mode in XP
Diasblaing EAX
Running with/without 9.6 patch
Disabling Write combining/AGP fast writes.

ALL other games work perfectly, infogrames have basically told me they cannot help. DOes anyone have any ideas? If so please email me at cs11na@hotmail.com personally or leave a reply to this thread. This is really stressing me out! I know its not an overheating problem because I can run Unreal 2 at 1600 x 1200 at full detail and play it for hours!!!

If it helps sometimes the screen goes blue and dodgy sound comes out of speakers.

Errm, try closing some other programs that might be affecting it, update your drivers. Apart from them, Wait and see what others say.

Have latest drivers for everything, only program I have in background is Norton Internet/Antivirus 2003. Here is my DXDiag info fopr anyone who has any idea what it all means. I have already heard from infogrames, and they have passed the problem onto the developers.

Have you tried disabling the antivirus program. These are notorious. Have you patched your Gp4?

I have a GB sis655 board too.
What speed dp you run your DDR at??

I have 1GB of PC3500, and yet still find that it runs better on this board with the 9700pro at lower than DDR400 :(

Try turning your DDR speed and mem setting down abit to see if that helps :)

whats your Power Supply Unit ? 350 ? i'd say if you have bin it and get a more powerful one...failing that it may be your ram...i had a new comp last december and had the same symptoms with different games..took me ages to find the culprit..thinking its all new so it must work...in the end it was a bad stick of ram less than a month old, although it gave me problems from new,..changed it and problemo gono....unfortunately there are a million and one things that can go wrong with computers..

and you say it only happens with gp4 ...mine only happened with hitman 2 and 3d mark 2001...try one stick of ram at a time......hope i've helped in any way

I agree with what shmall and the other post above says.

Also try uninstalling your soundcard drivers + physically remove soundcard

and try. The object is to narrow things down by process of elimination.

My P4 rig runs at 56fps currently with the 95 mod (bloody fantastic btw !)

I had problems initially o/c my 2.53ghz to 2.85ghz and had all sorts of problems with reboots and failures.

The problem ended up being that my Corsair XMS3200 Low Latency 512k ram modules weren't getting enough power.

I increased the voltage by 0.1 volts ( small ) in the bios of my Albatron mobo and that was the end of a problem that had taken hours off my life and yeah it does stress you out when you get a new rig and it misbehaves.

Another longshot may be to disconnect the SATA to the HD and just try with a UDMA 80 pin cable.... worth a try as it is new technology and may be buggy.

Also try out the Omega drivers. I swapped my Cat3.5 drivers for them just the other day and they are brilliant on my Radeon9500pro.

Good luck
vik :)

The power in a PSU is not the main issue. 350 is well enough. It's the quality that matters, as a PSU from someone like Antec or Enermax is going to have more stable voltages than a cheap one, where the voltages fluctuate, and can cause problems.

Anyway, back to GP4. Freezing the screen, or the BSOD, are two errors that often point to memory problems. What kind of RAM have you got? If it's Corsair, Mushkin, OCZ, Crucial or something similar then that isn't the problem.

Have you tried running it without your wheel installed, or without your sound card, in case GP4 just doesn't like one of your drivers?

I need to install GP4 on my new PC once I get a decent graphics card. I've got my Athlon 2500+ running at 3200+ speeds. ie. 11x200mhz=2.2ghz, and I have 512meg of Corsair XMS 3200, so once I get a 9600pro or 9700 gfx card, then this *should* run sweet

I have a dual pIII system, on a VIA-based board ... no shortage of problems.

IMO, chipsets like SiS or VIA are adequate at best .... reasonable if on a tight budget, but not without their problems. Personally, I'd try and exchange for an Intel-based board.

From experience, all the problems I've ever had with either RAM or AGP were solved if I swapped the same hardware into an intel-based board. You could be exchanging bits and pieces til the cows come home in search of the one thing causing your problems, and you may never fix it. Or, you could swap mainboards and in all likelihood, fix your problem.

As an aside though... I have never found GP4 to be overly stable on any platform and I have the same vid card as yourself. Perhaps you might consider the Omega ATI drivers.....

@ Bazza

I have Corsair XMS3200LL (low latency) and my probs were similar and ended up being the ram not getting enuf voltage.

.... also re your mention of the Radeon cards, by all means go for a 9700pro but steer clear of the 9600 if you can, go for the 9500pro instead... the 9600 is slower than the 9500 as its mem bandwidth is halved.

As an aside I was using the Omega drivers and just upgraded from 2609 to 2616. I then noticed graphical anomalies in GP4 with the new drivers which are based on Cat3.6. WHenever I went into the pits with bumpmapping on the track graphics were corrupt. I switched back to the 2609 driver and the problem disappeared.

The 9600 does indeed benchmark lower than the 9500, but benchmarks are flawed, and it has been discovered that Nvidia are "donating" money to madonion (3dmark makers), and therefore the benchmarks aren't as even as they are supposed to be.

The 9600 uses 0.13 micron technology too, so it's cooler, and quieter, and has more overclocking potential, even if there is only 4 rendering pipelines, as opposed to 8 in the 9500 pro.

I'll probably get a 9700np, just means I'll need to save up longer though, being a student and all. Will prob OC it to pro speeds, at least. Also liking the idea of watercooling. Anyone got a spare few hundred quid lying about for me?

Do you have the latest gpxpatch installed? I run a similar spec but with a geforcefx 5600 256mb, first time out it wouldn't run no way - soon as i updated gpxpatch everything was fine. Reading other forums, it seems to be a problem with directx 9 - are you running that?

I think its the RAM. I also had same issue 1 week ago. All other games run ok except for GP4. Tried another stick of RAM, then everything went OK. My PC also got a bit faster. The bad stick was slowly slowing down my system.
