Higher FPS brings erratic steering

I have a PIII 533mhz with a Nvidia Geforce2 MX400 64MB

With the default settings I get about 17-18 FPS. The game is playable, but every now and then I get a split second "freeze".

Whenever I play with the f1graphics.cfg file as per suggestions in this forum, I can bump my FPS up into the 20's but the most noticeable effect is that several times a lap the steering wheel will violently jump from side to side.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like the problem I had with F1 2002, then GP4, then GPL...

What controler are you using? It's like the kind of problem I had, and it happened becasue I was using a Gameport Joystick, not USB. It might only happen with higher FPS now, but it will eventually get worse and become unplayable if this is the problem I had. It has little to do with your FPS really.
