Team China

3rd. We are pleased with this result. Hoping now that Cheng can convert it into a win or a podium.

Would have expected something more, but we're in the top 10 so we can hope for a good race =)

A podium looks enough to me... :)

Meh... :-/ I think we'll have to refine our strategy and our car in our brand new factory we've just settled down just before coming to Surfers Paradise.

Deadlast is surely not the place we wanted to be. However, we expected something like that.
Race has been run, and we have a winner. Coverage should be up soon.

GPG Nations Cup Rd 3 Australian GP – Race day

Part 1

Hello and welcome back to Surfers Paradise. We are just about ready for the race start. Silva took pole position ahead of Rodriguez, with Tung and McGregor directly behind on the second row. This should see an exciting battle for the lead through the first few corners. So, with the cars now returning from their warmup lap, it’s time to head trackside to set the race in motion.

Weather Report

Here we go. Silva has pole, with Rodriguez directly alongside. With Tung and McGregor directly behind, it should make for an exciting battle through the first few chicanes. When all 5 lights go out, it’s showtime.

They’re off!

Into the first chicane and Tung is already on the move.

Silva looks up the inside in an attempt to retake the lead.

At the rear, Nikolov is right on the back of Briere.

Ahead of them is Kederer and Tafuro.

And ahead of them sits the next group of cars.

Back to the front as we see Rodriguez having a look at Silva’s 2nd place.

There’s a part of the front wing missing from the Japan car, which means Ihara will need to come into the pits for repairs.

The replay shows that Ihara went into the wall, but it also looks like Cremasco was involved.

From the onboard view, Ihara had attempted to go up the inside of Cremasco, but ended up making slight contact which caused Ihara to run into the wall, and Cremasco to have a close call.

Tung holds a comfortable lead out in front.

McGregor is sitting in 4th. He’ll be hoping for a good result here today in front of his home crowd.

Tung takes the fastest lap.

Wait a moment, McGregor looks to have a problem as both Coulthard and Keranen have gotten by.

The timing shows how the top 10 have moved.

McGregor is now out of the race. He’ll be a very unhappy man considering that he was running inside the top 4 just before the failure.

Big incident! Kuei and Pryce have both hit the wall. We need a replay to see what happened.

Pryce went slightly offline, which is why he ended up in the wall. Kuei locked up heading into the corner, which led to her running into the wall.

Ihara is back out after taking an unscheduled stop for repairs.

Silva now has the fastest lap.

As we focus in on Tung, let’s check out the current standings.

Grimaldi is giving Hatfield quite a handful to deal with.

At the same time, Ana is also giving Grimaldi a hard time.

After a failed attempt at getting by the Monaco car, Ana now finds himself having to deal with De Boer.

The timing shows that Silva again takes the fastest lap, just as Ana has a slight lockup.

Ana is in the wall. Seems the lockup could be the blame for this.

As the replay shows, the lockup is indeed the reason why Ana ended up in the wall.

Now Briere is in the wall.

Replay time. Briere was right behind Kederer, and had gone to the inside in an attempt to make a pass.

But being side by side like this is never going to work out. The two touch, which ends up leaving the Canada car in the wall.

The marshals finally move the stricken Singapore car out of the way.

Now Keranen looks to be in trouble.

And there’s the reason why. Smoke is billowing out from the rear of the Finland car.

Another car is in the wall, and this time it’s Tafuro.

Replay shows that he hit the wall on the exit of the second chicane.

It’s possible Tafuro may have slid on the fluids being left behind from the dying Finland car that caused him to go into the wall.

Keranen finally brings the Finland car to a stop, and is now out of the race.

With all the cars retiring left, right and centre, Vukcevic now finds himself up into the points.

As we ride onboard with Silva, let’s check out the current standings once again.

Time for our first break, so we hope to be back soon.

GPG Nations Cup Rd 3 Australian GP - Race Day

Part 2

Welcome back.

We return from the break to find Ancevski stopped by the side of the track.

His race is over thanks to a Loose Wheel.

It’s been a decent race so far for Nikolov, who now finds himself in 13th.

Just ahead of him are Kederer and Cremasco.

De Boer is comfortably inside the points as the next car in the queue is at least 3s behind.

Kederer is slowly reeling in Cremasco.

Silva is first in for his stop, signalling the start of the pitstops.

He rejoins down in 10th.

Tung and Rodriguez are both in for their stops.

Also in are Vukcevic and Grimaldi.

Rodriguez rejoins in 8th, behind Silva and ahead of the battle between Cremasco and Kederer.

Tung had rejoined in front of De Boer, who is now trying for a pass on the Chinese driver.

He isn’t able to make it by.

De Boer doesn’t give up though, and by the end of the back straight he is right behind Tung once again.

The race leaders are in for their stops.

De Boer and Kederer are also in.

Nikolov has managed to close right in onto the back of Cremasco.

Ihara is back in, this time for her scheduled stop.

Girard is the current race leader, but will need to eventually make a pitstop.

Hatfield is in.

He rejoins down in 9th.

Girard is now in for his stop.

Tung retakes the lead of the race.

Cremasco and Nikolov are both in.

There’s a car facing the wrong way on the exit of the chicane.

It’s Vukcevic.

Replay shows that he was in battle with Grimaldi, and contact was made going through the chicane. But it still doesn’t explain how they got into this position.

This may explain it better. Grimaldi was looking up the inside of Vukcevic.

But he didn’t get far enough up the inside, leaving himself nowhere to go but into the rear of the Montenegro car. The contact leaves Vukcevic facing the wrong way in a very dangerous position.

Vukcevic manages to get going again, but he won’t be happy with what happened.

Now that all cars have made their scheduled stops, let’s check out the current standings.

Rodriguez is having a great race so far. If he can hold onto his current position till the end, it’ll be his best result to date.

Behind him sit both Coulthard and Silvestre, who both look to be in a race of their own.

Missed by the cameras, Nikolov has gotten by Kederer, while Vukcevic has managed to claw back most of the time he lost when he was booted into a near miss with the wall by Grimaldi.

Ihara is trying her best in this race, but any hopes for a points finish are pretty much gone.

At the front, it looks like Silva is slowly closing in on Tung.

Silvestre is getting closer to the back of Coulthard.

Girard still has quite a lot of ground to make up should he wish to get involved in the battle between Coulthard and Silvestre.

It looks like Kederer has lost ground to Nikolov.

Uh-oh. Silvestre has locked up his brakes heading into the chicane. Surely that’s his race over?

Fortunately, he was able to avoid running into the wall, but has lost time to Coulthard and allowed Girard to close in closer to him.

Silva has closed in even more on Tung.

As we ride onboard with Silva, let’s check out the current standings.

Time for yet another break. Stay tuned for more of our coverage.

GPG Nations Cup Rd 3 Australian GP - Race Day

Part 3

Welcome back once again.

It looks like Rodriguez is closing in on Silva.

Grimaldi is trying his best to claw back the ground to Hatfield.

The split between Tung and Silva looks to be consistent.

P1 to P3, all in the same shot.

Silvestre has managed to claw back some time to Coulthard.

It looks like Grimaldi has gained time again on Hatfield.

Grimaldi is now even closer, and heading down the straight he goes for a move up the inside.

However, Hatfield manages to hold his position.

Grimaldi doesn’t lose much time, and is on the back of Hatfield once again. But this may be too close for comfort.

At least De Boer can get some amusement out of seeing the battle unfold in front of him.

If he gets lucky enough, he may be able to make a move on Grimaldi, but he won’t be able to do that here.

Oh no, Girard has come to a halt with smoke billowing from the rear of the car.

Yet another retirement here today.

The battle between Nikolov and Kederer is still on, but now they have to deal with De Boer.

Replay time. De Boer decided to have a look up the inside of Grimaldi into the chicane.

He managed to get ahead, but didn’t have enough room to complete the move. As a result, Grimaldi is left with nowhere to go but into the side of the Netherlands car, leaving De Boer in a spin and facing the wrong way.

The view of the contact from the trackside camera.

Now Grimaldi has to deal with having to defend from Cremasco, while De Boer now has his hands full holding off both Nikolov and Kederer.

Silva is still closing in on Tung.

Oh no, Rodriguez has headed into the pits for an unscheduled stop, and we hear it’s due to a Throttle Failure. Rodriguez will be gutted by this as he was on course for a podium finish.

As a result, it now puts Coulthard onto the podium.

As we watch Silva try his best to close in even more on Tung, let’s check out the current standings again.

5 laps remaining.

While the battle is on for the lead, the battle for the final spot on the podium is also going on.

Rodriguez now finds himself down in 5th.

The timing shows the movers and shakers inside the top 10.

Oh no, there’s damage to the front wing of the Portugal car. What has happened to Silva?

Replay time. Silva was attempting to make a move on the inside through the chicane, similar to how Tung made the same move at the start of the race.

However, like all the incidents before, he didn’t have enough space to make the move stick and ends up running wide.

The end result sees the Portugal car in the wall. Silva is lucky he only suffered front wing damage as it would’ve been race over had a wheel been taken off.

Coulthard is in the wall! He was running in 3rd and would’ve moved up to 2nd due to Silva suffering damage. What happened to the Scotland car?

It would seem Coulthard got offline slightly, leaving him out wide and on a collision course with the wall. He’ll be gutted for sure.

3 laps now remaining.

Into the pits comes Silva for a new front wing. He had a chance at the lead, but it’s now long gone for the Portuguese driver.

That now leaves Silvestre in 2nd.

Now Rodriguez finds himself back up to 3rd.

Silva rejoins in 4th. He’ll still be disappointed by what happened.

Rodriguez now has the fastest lap.

Hatfield and Grimaldi can’t seem to break away from each other.

It’s now the final lap.

Silva retakes the fastest lap.

It’s been a fantastic race for Tung. He took the lead at the beginning, managed to hold onto it after the stops, and even held off a passing attempt from Silva in the final few laps.

He comes out of the final corner for the last time.

And takes the chequered flag to win the Australian GP.

Silvestre crosses the line to take 2nd.

And Rodriguez takes the final podium position in 3rd.

Silva finishes 4th, and also takes the fastest lap again.

Hatfield manages to keep Grimaldi behind him to finish 5th.

With that, our coverage finally comes to an end. Congratulations Cheng Tung and Team China, the winner of Rd 3. It’s their second victory so far this season, and it’s looking good for them in the championship standings. It’s a shame to have seen Silva hit the wall in the final few laps. He had the speed to win this race, but making a move into the chicane was probably not the best idea. But the biggest upset of the race is clearly the retirement of Team Australia when they were holding down a top 5 position. If it hadn’t been for that, they may have even been in for a chance at the podium seeing how the contenders were all falling by the wayside. Anyways, we hope you enjoyed our coverage of the Australian GP, and we hope to see you all back again next time when we bring you the coverage for Rd 4. So until then, it’s goodbye from Surfers Paradise.
