Can you help me get started GP4

I'm new here and very stuck!

I used to play GP1 and 2 but have been away from gaming for a long time. I've managed to run GP4 but slowley and the program crashed after four or five laps.

What I'm looking for is the spec of a pc that will run this game in its origional form at full speed, I am able to build it myself but configuring the soft stuff might be a bridge too far.

I only want this pc to run GP4 so if its best under win98 thats cool.

I'm in Cheshire UK

Minimum is XP2-SP2/3. 4GB ram, graphics card with 512MB on-board. Installation guide is in the FAQ.

Thanks for your replys

Steve, I dont want to run it on this pc as I do all my work on this. I just want to get it running on a new one at full speed. So any advice on what to get/build would be apprecated.

Mortal, what is XP2-SP2/3? Do you know what motherboard, ram type, graphics card type or processor and is pci or agp better. Like I said, Ive been away for a long time (thanks).

I have a few quid for this but not silly money.

As an example, I run:

Windows 7
Intel i3 550 CPU
nVidia GeForce 8800GTS
4GB RAM
128GB SSD

GP4 runs like a hot knife through butter with that setup :-)

hi phil

I also built me a box especially for gp4 (+trackediting) for a few hundred swiss francs (maybe GBP 500) some 18 months ago, just the box. I'd say any system will do, though GHz is more important than number of cores as gp4 has to run on a single core, else it crashes. 4GB RAM is way enough, with windows xp. and I use a silent nvidia geforce 520 GT and a soundblaster audigy. but IMO the best decision was to use an SSD-harddrive (60GB will do).

now, from cold start to "sitting on the grid in monaco, waiting for the lights" lasts less than 45s. and the PO shows 31%, with nice 1600x1200 gfx @49fps on a 24" screen (not included in the mentioned price).
and the box is pretty much silent. no problem sitting next to it for many hours a day (and I'm sensitive to pc noise).

dont hesitate to drop me a line (email) if you are interested in more details

regards, addie

Windows XP, Service Pack 2 or 3 (Mal, you did a typo ;) )

I think the computer isn't in fault unless yours is under minimal specs of the game. I have a 4-cores AMD proc, 8Go RAM with Windows Seven 64bit, and it runs like a charm. However, keep in mind that more than 3Go RAM with a 32bit OS is useless (32bit OS can't get more than that).

On the software part, you need to install patches in a peculiar order and, if you're on Seven (or Eight) set compatibility mode to XP (what Mal said) with administrative rights for the game and GPxPatch. You'll maybe have to tweak some other things as well like the graphic config file but there are plenty of threads about that part on the forum and on the FAQ.

Not been on another planet but I do know how to read, maybe you should try it before being rude to strangers.

No, he wants to build a new one only for GP4 use.

As I said before, I think the hardware part is not responsible of the issue unless your comp is an old one and under the minimal required specifications for the game (so something like Pentium2, 64 Mo RAM and 16 Mo Dx8 video card). Some people are running GP4 on new computers with Windows 8 so any recent computer (or not so recent) would do it. What you need to do is tweak your settings in the right way.

In a other way, if you want a separated computer to play the game, you can also do a dual-boot by installing a fresh OS on a new partition with GP4 in it. That's what I did : first partition with Linux for my own work and a second partition with Seven for my games. If you're enough confident with that kind of stuff it worth try it.

as he did not informed in details which is the PC specification and complained of not being able to satisfactorily perform the GP4 is that I pointed this tool (BELARC).

if he's been very specific in your question surely would have given some indications (Y)
