That tarmac run-off was initially the original Paddock Hill bend.

Yep.

I think it's one of the few corners in the world which actually become better with the modification than it was before. Strange thing is that a lot of these corners is at Brands Hatch, for example Westfield and Sheene's (old Dingle Dell Corner) - both became quicker, but retained or even increased the challenge of the original.

However, I have to note that Graham Hill Bend was not as sharp in the '80s as it is on these pictures. This is the post-2001 configuration.

This should give a good idea about the changes:

Note that this compares the 1960-1974 layout and the current one, at least for Graham Hill Bend and the Cooper Straight. After 1974, the end of the Cooper Straight was realigned to its present location, so for an authentic '80s version the old Graham Hill Bend and the new Cooper Straight should be used (with a link between the two not shown in this map).
