For those of you interested - the FIA have published the 2014 reglations:

[argent.fia.com]

I've had a quick read, and here are some of the changes:

Front wing width to be reduced to 1650mm (currently 1800mm)
All of the engine changes that we expected
Drivers must be able to start the car themselves
8 gears instead of 7
Must use the same gear ratio all season, but one change is allowed.

I think the last one is the most interesting - drivers will have the same gear ratios at Monaco as they do at Monza (unless they use their single change). They will need both the acceleration for Monaco, and the top speed for Monza. Maybe they will only use 5 or 6 of the gears at slower tracks?

Thats an interesting one, but i think the 8 gears may well solve their problem, they put the first 6/7 gears a little longer than monaco, maybe inbetween monaco and monza, then the 8th gear is the one the gets them to top speed on a long straight? I dont know enough about cars to say that with any form of expert opinion

8 gears and a 15k rev limit? What are the FIA smoking?

wouldnt their free change be used @ monaco ;p

the start the car themselves thing should make the cars a LOT heavier with the addition of a starter motor

EDIT:

I'd also say this is a major change

According to rule 5.19: "The car must be run in electric mode (no ignition and no fuel supply to the engine) at all times when being driven in the pit lane."

and keep that ratio for the rest of the season? I doubt it.

i read it as they're alowed one race where they can defer "free change" and then they'd change straight back after ;p

i think your version does make more sense tbh.

cos if they start bahrain and then realise they've made a colossal mistake in ratio they get a change.

I'm a noob in turbo engine but, with turbo engine, there is no airbox right? So with that rule, will F1 cars have an awful fin in the engine cover to fill the mandatory bodysection ( a la LeMans cars now )?

I think these guys at the Fia gone nuts.

Now the driver has to start the engine himself what more they want on the steering wheen/cockpit its already more than full.

8 gears WTF!!! (no car in the world got 8 forward gears so why f1?) and no gear ratio change all season again WTF!!!

another thing is in pitlane engine has to go to electric mode so it wont use any fuel.

all these new rules make f1 look like crap in my view.

Do they really think this is gonna help the world and its climate if 24 cars run eco friendly.

If all these new rules gonna be like i read there it will be total dissaster and i wont watch it anymore cause none of this makes sense.

F1 used to be the top of motorsports and not some playground for the ideas of people that earn there money by having these ideas.

just my opinion but its really sad i think lol
Shame on you fia you ruin what used to be my favorite sport. Thank God i got some dvd´s of old days

I don't like them too much (and 8 gears is too many), but to be honest, none of these are going to detract from the sport in any way. For a spectator there won't be any real difference.

The no change to the gear ratios will be down to cost savings. Currently teams can only use so many gearboxes in a season but as far as I'm aware they can change the cogs as often as they want (so long as they're not in parc ferme conditions), which seems a bit defeatist.

Manufacturers do.

That - again - would be the manufacturers earning money.

Something doesn't add up. Let me fix it for you.
