Is this pronounced Pereth like Jerez is pronounced Hereth or is it pronounced Perez???

Technically it should be Pereth, shouldn't it? But I bet it isn't.

I only know that whathever it is pronounced Italian commenters will spell it wrong ... so I'll know how it's not pronounced

I remember hearing that Spanish in Mexico is a little different to what it is in Spain and that the "th" pronunciation of "z" is itself quite limited. So I looked around youtube and found a news report from a Mexican sports channel about Perez's win at Monaco last year and I can confirm that he was referred to by the Mexican reporter as Perez, not Pereth, throughout, so I'd say everyone should just call him Perez.

How that will play out in the commentary boxes remains to be seen but in this case the simpler looking pronunciation is the correct one.

On the subject of last names - Petrov, effectively meaning exactly the same thing as Perez (Peters or Peterson), is technically pronounced wrong but is much more complicated to explain than Perez. Basically, whenever I hear it spoken on the BBC (radio and TV) it sounds like PET-roff. This pronunciation simply wouldn't work in Russian - the explanation for why that is, is very complicated, though I could try and explain if anyone has any interest...
So yeah, basically it "should" be pronounced PyehTROHV.
But then, we don't say Michael Schumacher like the name would sound in German, and it seemed to take a few years before any consensus was held on the pronunciation of the name Kubica.

So as I say again, in this case the easiest looking way of saying Perez is, for once, technically the correct one.

Do you mean whether the emphasis is on the first or second E, as in VEttel pronounced like nettle for the first E or VettEl pronounced like propel (as in plane propellers)? So many grey areas.

I hated the word "toll" for years. Is it meant to be pronounced toll like lolly or doll, or tole like sole and mole? People always say it like tole and not toll, and I think that makes no sense because the double L and no E changes it.

EDIT: this is why lots of english people struggle to learn other languages - we don't even understand our own.

As I understand it, the final V of Petrov (Петров) should be pronounced FF, so it'd be something like Pyetroff. But I've studied russian for four months only, so what do I know.

You are correct, sir! I'd say you can't go wrong with treating it like a v but in the IPA it would be an 'f' where a 'v' would be better suited to в when in ваша, so you are indeed more accurate.

No, that's just how everybody pronounces it it has to be like "Vettl", without pronouncing the second e.
And Perez should be spelled like "Perez", or at least it will be like this, because in the length of time it is much easier than saying "Pereth"

Vettel perfectly rhymes with "settlle" unless you're Amercian and pronounce your "tt" like "dd".

Also the "V" is voiceless (like the initial sound in "fan" and not "van".
