Lotus Racing will run its cars in a black and gold colour scheme next season, the Norfolk-based outfit has revealed in the countdown to the this weekend’s season finale in Abu Dhabi. It is an interesting development, especially as the dispute with Proton - owner of Group Lotus - over the use of the Lotus name has still to be resolved.

Lotus Racing noted that the decision 'echoes the evolution of Lotus F1 cars of the past by moving from the iconic green and yellow paint scheme of the first season to the much loved black and gold'.

That's a pity, as I like the 2010 livery, but possibly this will go to the Lotus Renault team now.

a little bit off topic, but it''s about Lotus and Lotus:

The Lotus situation in a nutshell

The latest word in Brazil is as follows.

Lotus ran this year as Lotus under a license from Lotus, but in Singapore Lotus announced that next year it would be changing its name from Lotus to Lotus. This news was immediately met with a statement from Lotus which said that it had the rights to use the Lotus name and that Lotus did not, so Lotus could not change its name from Lotus to Lotus.

Next season Lotus will not allow Lotus to call itself Lotus because Lotus wants to do a deal to take over Renault and call it Lotus so Lotus will have to call itself something else other than Lotus.

Lotus will also take a stake at ART in GP2 to create ART Lotus so the team set up by the guys running Lotus who won’t be able to call their teams Lotus next year will have to call their GP2 team Air Asia.

Takuma Sato ran a Lotus in Indycar this year which was actually a Honda powered Dallara but that was under a license from Lotus and had nothing to do with Lotus.

And that’s before we even get into the fact that Lotus has just signed to use Renault engines next season so if Renault is called Lotus but Lotus can’t be called Lotus but will be using Renault engines and Renault will be called Lotus and I’ve gone cross-eyed.

Basically.

:p

It's a case of too many Lotuses spoiling the broth...

Right.

So Renault will be called Lotus Renault, and the current Lotus team will race in black and gold but not be called Lotus.

yeah, its a great pity.

It would have been perfect if Team Lotus and Lotus Cars (Proton) linked up again with Fernandes' team, instead of the mess we have now

Imo the current Lotus team should be called something historically significant.

Soooooo... where have Group Lotus got all this money from to buy a stake (or buy, idk) ART GP, a stake in Renault F1 (or Genii or whatever), design an LMP2 car, run a Indycar and maybe design an aeropackage for it?

Am I missing something obvious here? They just have come up all of a sudden it seems.

My theory is they are going to use the relative success of Fernandes Lotus to their addvantage... Its a great shame what is happening but Tony Fernandess seems a genuine guy who wants to take the team to great places... He has done nothing but good, he hasnt spoiled the name or over used it. The guy deserves alot of credit imo. He seems like a real racer...

Well they are Proton. They are banking on the new models they announced recently bringing in serious amounts of cash.

And thats the other thing ,dont they plan GT2/GT3/GT4 race cars too?! I guess that will be more a case of them selling rather than running though.

Still seems strange have this happen almost all at once.

I assume the Malaysian government is funding some of Lotus/Proton's efforts.

It's kinda OT, but I can see Lotus/Proton falling flat on their faces. The new cars are priced and aimed at Ferrari and Lambo territory. The new Elise replacement is £20k more than previously. It's all very impressive, but it's also not the typical Lotus market. They are now attacking the Italian Supercar market. If you want a British supercar that is in the same group as a Ferrari, you'd chose an Aston over the Lotus every time.
