Russian PM Putin drives Renault F1 car
8 November 2010

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has enjoyed his first taste of Formula 1, getting behind the wheel of a luminous Renault machine and reaching speeds in the region of 240 kilometres per hour (150mph).

Known as a lover of sports cars, 58-year-old Putin – clad with a helmet colour scheme matching the colours of the Russian flag - made his unofficial F1 debut on a special track in Leningrad.

Although these shots may be nothing more than a public relations exercise, Putin reiterated his excitement over seeing the sport race in the country for the first time from 2014 onwards.

Anybody know what car it is?
I think it looks a bit like the R202 or R23

Have you seen 06 or 07 F1 Seasons??? ;)

Definitely it is a B201 with a R202 nose, I think :)

After googling an image of the B201 I think you may be right!
I just knew it looked odd at first sight

It's a B102 with new body work. It's got quite a lot of botched modern parts on it. It's a V6 engine too.

Looks like the 2002 car with changes on the sides/rear, as Dave said.

I knew I recognised it. I was looking down the Jordan line though (probably the yellow threw me ;))

Well Spotted.
The bar at the back of the engine cover had me totally confused.
Now it all makes sense

Ah, nice one Briere. I was indeed baffled by the shape, as it didn't look like any of the old Renaults/Benettons.

Not just a 2001 Prost. If you look closely you'll see it's been adapted to wider track suspension, with some Renault body work.

I never understand this...

Why not simply use a an old Renault f1 car? rather than adapt a Prost with a different FW and wider track suspension :s

But yeah, very well spotted Briere!!!! The sidepods did look familiar but I could have starred for months and not realized what it was!

Looked better in blue ;)

How bizarre then. Why? What on earth processed them to hack about a 2001 Prost to pre 1998 wide-track specifications, whack random bits of bodywork on it, plonk a V6 engine in it and paint it in 2010 Renault colours?

I know a Prost AP04 is being used as a F1 experience car.

It could be this one, and the Renault livery is explained by the Russian links to Renault.

btw, why are GP Update calling the city Leningrad, it hasn't been called that for 20 years...
