Yeah, I don't agree with it but it's the sort of attitude any big corporation would take. I bet most teams now wouldn't allow their drivers to even go rallying for health and safety reasons, never mind in another manufacturers' car for contractual and exposure reasons (I'm guessing Kubica was in a Renault anyway? I don't know). It'll just take one incident like this and they'll step up the level of control.

Some German news (n-tv.de) are reporting bollocks. I presume they're the German equivalent of a deformed love child of the Daily Mail and Sky Sports.

There's no way they could have the details they are claiming, which are namely:

fire-fighters had to cut the car off to get kubica out.
they say it was on his way to the rally not in the rally itself.
crashed car against church
doctors: life threating injuries
hand is destroyed and amputation possible
kubica has inner injuries too
upper leg is broken.

(taken from a poster on the Autosport forums)

Some of this is undoubtedly true (the fire fighters, the before-start crash, the wall outside a church and possibly the fractured left femur), but it basically looks like a tabloid-esq "arrrghhhhh" tactic.

There are some reports of a guardrail entering the car, but until we see pictures or get an official report, I'm going to take everything other than the BBC article (who generally don't report on something unless they're certain it's the case) as bollocks like the above.

LOL, I'm sure he did. But was he insured?

You made it sound like there's been a crash involving a boy racer in Whitby!

Huh? He had permission from Renault. It's a big deal because he's been denied permission to drive any other car that isn't a Renault in rally until this event. He missed Rally Monte Carlo because of it.

A Dutch source that I find quite reliable says that Kubica indeed crashed into a church wall at high speed while driving towards the rally. He is 'severely injured', but no further details about it are given.

Bugger :(
Even if he's fit for Bahrain I'd say this is going to seriously blunt Renault's pre/early-season development...

Apparently Boullier said last week that Senna will be first choice reserve for Renault as he's got slightly more relevant experience than Grosjean.
Also that whole Senna-Lotus JPS livery thing maybe.
This might just be his opportunity to show that in a good car and team he is more than capable of performing well, or not.

Thing is about Kubica, I remember reading a few weeks ago that Renault effectively banned him from competing in the Monte-Carlo Rally because he was about to compete in a car that wasn't a Renault, or something like that - might be wrong - but it seemed more to do with brand image than fears for his safety. So I'm surprised that he was competing in another rally anyway in a Skoda. (-/edit - Dave explained it, there we go.) But the thing is, I liked Kubica for wanting to go rallying - it kinda reminded me of drivers back in the 60s like Moss who would basically take part in any motor-race going. I liked that. But, maybe, yes, perhaps the drivers today should be more bubble-wrapped to prevent damage between their contractual obligations?

Yeah, I'd assume Senna would be in the car.

I think I'll have to just go away and come back a bit later when more is known - the rumours that are flying about right now I can barely watch - really hope they're not true. :(

Its difficult. Maybe before he joined the team he said he will only sign this contract if he can do other racing, as the other racing would supplement his income from f1 to be sufficient. In that case i doubt theyll do anything to stop him.

Also, with the very limited testing we have these days, maybe the team prefer him to do rallying etc. To keep some sharpness and competitiveness.

I could be very wrong though.

According to the Italian magazine's "Autosprint" website, Kubica is in "really serious - thought NOT life-threathening - conditions. They speak about several fractures and that he might lose a hand, but NOTHING is confirmed. I hope he gets well soon!

Apparently a statement on his injuries is due soon - hope he's not too badly hurt.

As a slight aside, Tiff Needell has pointed out the likelihood of us seeing the Senna name on a black and gold (Lotus) Renault, which I fully expect to be his last real crack at a drive.
