The current top 6 in the WDC standings have all lead the WDC this season.

Thats right isnt it ?

Im sure Alonso. Massa, Button and Vettel have all lead for short periods of time with Webber and Lewis leading most.

When has this happened before? My first thought was 2003 when DC, Kimi, MS, and Montoya all lead i think, and maybe even Ralf (not too sure though).

Vettel hasn't led the championship officially yet. He was equal with Webber after Monaco, but Webber had more wins.

Interestingly, no driver has won a race this year while in the championship lead.

Really? I hadn't noticed that. Not a bad little fact.

That is pretty interesting.

I guess that will change before the end of the season. Would be quite a funny little fact that a driver is crowned champion without actually having won a GP whilst leading the WDC.

Thats got me thinking, has a driver ever won the WDC without leading during the season?
Kimi (07) and if Alonso does it this year they both only lead for 2 races - but I cant think of a shorter time leading the title?

2013 - Nando must come through..

Massa in 2008 was about as close as you can get to doing it as well.

Hmm yeah but Massa led the championship for one race in 2008.

If Alonso does win this years WDC, would be pretty interesting. Would we have to go back to 2005 when the driver who the first race DIDNT win the title?

Alonso won at Bahrain in 06 - went onto title
Kimi dominated oz 07 - won the WDC, somehow.
Lewis won oz 08 and won the WDC
JB won in oz and went onto win the best WDC in the history of history
And Alonso won this year at Bahrain.

Yes, Albert Park has been a very good indicator for the championship (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009). Its only missed 5 times (assuming Jenson doesn't do it this year) in 15 races!

I had forgotten that, from checking he did lead after Magny-Cours.

And I call myself a fan! ;)

since 1990 only David Coulthard (97 and 03) Eddie Irvine (99) and Giancarlo Fisichella (05) have won the first race and not gone on to claim the title.

Yeah I know, I was just making a general point about Albert Park which has usually been the first race.

Its funny because we usually say Albert park is a lottery race nad generally not a true representative.

I guess it still holds true, for example, the way Kimi dominated in 2007, you would have thought he would through the whole season...
