What tracks would be in your ideal F1 calendar?

Hi guys! I'm from Hungary and I'm a long time F1 fan. I'm 21 and I was only 7 when I saw Villeneuve and Hill battle it out for the lead in the 1996 Australian Grand Prix. I watched every race since then. I know Grandprixgames.org for long as I have played with GP2, GP3 and GP4 as well but I only followed the GP4 topic here up until now. I sought a forum where I can discuss the past and recent events of F1 with an international community so expect me to write quite a lot here from now on as well.

So much for a brief introduction.

My first question I'm curious about is your ideal F1 calendar with say up to 20 races. Lately I was very fond of the history of the circuits. Maybe this has been discussed before but anyway... This is my first topic and maybe there are others who want to share their views as well.

So at first sight I would include these.

- Silverstone pre-1975 without the Woodcote chicane.
- Brands Hatch without the chicanes.
- Donington Park pre-2010.
- Paul Ricard original, with the longest Mistral possible.
- Hockenheim pre-1968 again without the chicanes.
- Nürburgring. Yeah again the oldest one. :)
- Monza pre-1972.
- Spa 1983 but with the old, not straightened Eau Rouge. Now that corner had something special.
- Österreichring, old version.
- Monte-Carlo. Again... old version with flattened St. Devote, old chicane and without the Piscine complex.
- Watkins Glen without the chicane before that U-turn.
- Suzuka 1983 WITH the first version of the chicane OR... without it. :D
- Interlagos pre-1990.

These are probably the greatest venues of all time it would be great to see a race on them again with proper safety measures, etc.

I would also include Kyalami, Zandvoort, Hermanos Rodriguez, and maybe Montréal and Buenos Aires as well but I don't know much of the history of these tracks.

Now up to you. Which ones would you choose? Feel free to let us know.

Il'd love to have a calendar consisting of all the Tilke modified tracks, then them all in reverse just to make it up the numbers.

Seriously though, many people look through rose tinted glasses for the older tracks, most of them would be terrible now!

Only circuit I would add though would be the Birmingham SuperPrix! I could have F1 on my doorstep then ;)

Yeah, would be really nice to have a race near where you live. I have a racetrack in my town, but it's way too short for F1.

Firstly, kudos on your English. It is excellent :)

Anyway, I disagree with Matt above saying most would be terrible now - they just need tweaking.

I personally would love F1 to go to Laguna Seca, there is no reason why the pits cannot be updated a little, it would save having to have the Tilke-fest that is Austin. And it's in California, so it suits Bernie fine.

We have an awesome new circuit in the Algarve, Portugal which is just sitting there. So we could use that.

I love old street circuits like Adelaide and Detroit, we could bring them back, or perhaps Surfer's Paradise? Too many in Australia now though :P

Oh the old schools, Kyalami was a great track, so was Paul Ricard but I think that one would be boring now cause it's been too sterilised.

For now my main concern is keeping Suzuka on the calender, it is an amazing track but its future is not looking good :(

Anyway, here would be the perfect calender -

Melbourne
Interlagos
Imola
Portimão
Zandvoort
Monaco
Montreal
Detroit
Laguna Seca
Silverstone
Hockenheim
Monza
Spa
Kyalami
Singapore
Abu Dhabi
Suzuka
Adelaide

Yes there are two Australian and US GPs. Deal with it!

This would probably be my perfect calendar;

Albert Park
Sepang
Kyalami
Algarve
Istanbul
Monaco
Montreal
Road America
Le Mans (full 24h track)
Silverstone
Hockenheim (pre-2001)
Hungaroring
Monza
Spa
Singapore
Suzuka
Potrero de los Funes
Interlagos

I think that would be a nice calendar, taking in every inhabited continent while focusing on the traditional fanbases of F1 - with some great circuits/events as well.

Monte Carlo
Istanbul
Montreal
Laguna Seca
Mexico City
Silverstone
Dijon

What's to hate? :/

It was designed by the same dude as Hockenheim, Zolder and Jarama, and Zandvoort, well not designed, but he was "involved" with Zandvoort.

i don't know... every single person thinks suzuka is an awesome, technical circuit... i just find it boring... with boring races

at least in Fuji it rains every time, what makes racing there interesting...

Wow I thought this topic was dead because the replies came slowly at first glance.

Well thank you. :)

Some of you pointed out a few tracks I missed by chance for example Laguna Seca and Portimao which I love as well.

Mainly to the guy with the first answer: it's not that I hate all the tracks which are included in the present calendars because there are good ones as well - Istanbul is not that bad, Singapore has the character, etc. - it's just that if I could choose 16 track, 16 of my personal favourites than those would be on the list mentioned above.

Digging deeper into the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend I chose to do a few laps on the old Interlagos circuit in a modded Grand Prix 4 and it was breathtaking. Blatantly fast, sweeping curves and you really got to have balls to negotiate some corners right - especially the first two. It was fantastic. I think the present layout is one of the highlights of this season but it's still just a mere shadow of the old one.

If you're counting old tracks, then there are/were zillions of the things which are better than we have currently.

Rouen. The old Zandvoort. The old Silverstone (though atypically it had morphed into a similarly good layout over time - though I'm still not convinced by the 2010 alterations yet). The old Monaco of 10 years ago is 100 times better than the comparably pansied version we have now, and the 50s and 60s version better still. Monza was better a decade ago and better still the further back you go. Spa, though still excellent, is again worse than the one from a decade ago, which again is a shadow of the 60s and 70s version. The Osterreichring. Kyalami (the old one). Mosport. Watkins. Anderstorp would be mental in a modern F1 car.

Anyone (Matt) who thinks that the above (and most of the tracks we've lost in the past 20 years) are worse than 80% of what we currently have needs to have a go at GPL or any decent game which features historic layouts.
