I was reading in a book a couple of days ago, and found out that in the last couple of years, the winner of the title has always been the winner of the first race. Think about it: In 07 Raikkonen won the first race, he wins the title...same in 08, with Lewis, and the same again in 09 with Button.

I went all the way back to 1990. Here is the proof ;):

1990 Senna WDC Senna
1991 Senna WDC Senna
1992 Mansell WDC Mansell
1993 Prost WDC Prost
1994 Schumi WDC Schumi
1995 Schumi WDC Schumi
1996 Hill WDC Hill
1997 Coulthard WDC Villenueve
1998 Hakkinen WDC Hakkinen
1999 Irvine WDC Hakkinen
2000 Schumi WDC Schumi
2001 Schumi WDC Schumi
2002 Schumi WDC Schumi
2003 Coulthard WDC Schumi
2004 Schumi WDC Schumi
2005 Fisi WDC Alonso
2006 Alonso WDC Alonso
2007 Kimi WDC Kimi
2008 Hamilton WDC Hamilton
2009 Button WDC Button

As you can see, 16/20 times this has happened since 1990.

If any of us were wise, we'd put our money on Alonso this year ;)

Yeah, I've been aware of this for a while. The first race tends to be a pretty good indicator of who will be the form drivers in any particular season.
It's an interesting stat definitely, and seems to be fairly reliable, although this year might end up being an exception.

Yeah I also have been aware of this start though admittedly not aware of how far it went back,

however would have to say that it appears to be unlikely that it will be correct, not impossible however.

1989 Mansell / Prost
1988 Prost / Senna
1987 Prost / Piquet
1986 Piquet / Prost
1985 Prost / Prost
1984 Prost / Lauda
1983 Piquet / Piquet
1982 Prost / Rosberg
1981 Jones / Piquet
1980 Jones / Jones

The 80's didn't have so much 1st race / champions.

I think, this season we had 5 driver fighting for victories regularly, something that didnt happened some years ago when there was only 2 or 3 drivers fighting for the championship. Now we have the best drivers in the good cars, something that I think wasnt happening since the late 70s. so I took the results from 1974 to 1979, when there was moreless 5 or 6 drivers fighting for wins every weekend (i obviated 71, 72 and 73 because in these years all was between Fittipaldi, Peterson and Stewart)

1974 Hulme/Fittipaldi
1975 Fittipaldi/Lauda
1976 Lauda/ Hunt
1977 Scheckter/ Lauda
1978 Andretti / Andretti
1979 Laffitte/ Scheckter

so, in those years when we had a quality grid (Lauda, Peterson, Fittipaldi, Reutemann, Scheckter, Hunt, Andretti, Laffitte, Depailler, Regazzoni, etc), like today (MS, Rosberg, Alonso, Hamilton, Webber, Massa, Vettel, Button, Kubica) only 1 TIME!!! the driver that took the first race took the championship.
