My Gsh Bernie, your time has passed... Stop thinking in those kind of things... What's next "2020 Moon GP" with the Earth as a Background????

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says he is working on a deal to have a grand prix in New York by 2012.
"I'm trying to do it for 2012," Ecclestone told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"It would be in front of Manhattan, in New Jersey, with the skyscrapers in the background, 15 minutes from the heart of New York to the circuit, it would be marvellous."

The United States has no Formula 1 race now, after Indianapolis was dropped from the calendar following the 2007 race. Ecclestone also said he was hoping to have a grand prix in Rome too, but made it clear that Monza was not under threat.

"I hope we'll have it, it would be nice," he said. "The promoters seem resolute. I repeat once again that there's never been the intention of taking Monza off the calendar, and alternating hasn't even been considered.
"Monza is Monza and it's the venue of the Italian GP. Rome will be something else."

The view would be nice but if the circuit is a designed by a certain Mr. Tilke, the view will will be the only thing I'll like.

Bernie has seriously lost it. We need someone like Gerhard Berger to take control. Does anyone remember when Bernie had that stupid idea of having short-cuts on chicanes a couple of months back?

it would be a street circuit though, so Tilke wouldn't have too much influence over it, he couldn't really "design" the corners, he'd have to just work with whatever roads are already there.

the logistics would probably render it impossible to stage though. you can get away with closing Monte Carlo for a few hours each day over a race weekend as it's a sleepy town the rest of the time. you probably couldn't do that to a large section of New York.

RIP Jules, never to be forgotten. #KeepFightingMichael

and the US Government are hardly likely to put any money into it - and neither's New York, because they don't need any more tourist money

Yeah, New York has a reputation for being gridlocked and hectic at the BEST of times, so shutting off a few streets and trying to set all this up, (both race and team logistics) would be very, VERY difficult. I'd have to go with Frantic and suggest Watkins Glen.

I think F1 should pay America as much respect as America pays F1.

In other words, let's hang the idea of a US GP once and for all.

Joe Saward hit the nail on the head - F1 needs a New York GP more than New York needs it.....

That probably won't happen, because most of the sponsors and manufacturers want the exposure in the big American market.

I think Long Beach would be a good place for a F1 race again, if Bernie wants a street track

Long Beach and the Glen?

Well I've been to Long Beach. It's awesome. But it ain't hosting no modern GPs. I haven't been to the glen, but that certainly is no where near to F1 standards. So lets not @#$%& up 2 of Americans best circuits. There are other series in the world which don't require destroying the circuits to enjoy them, so lets not ruin the experience for them.

But it would be fantastic to run a GP at the Glen or Long Beach, yes?

I was reading this article a few days ago about the possibility that F1 could race on an oval in America

Dave, this will probably never eventuate, but do you think it would have any success if they did try it?

In an ideal world where F1 won't turn up and rape the circuits? Yes, of course. But then we'd also be running almost exlusively in America, because other than a handful of circuits (Spa, Suzuka and Bathurst off the top of my head), America has the monopoly on awesome circuits, despite everyone thinking they just run round ovals all day. Watkins Glen, Sears Point, Road America, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Long Beach, Cleveland, Detroit Belle Isle, Barber, St Petersberg, Mid Ohio, Laguna Seca, and if you want to include Canada with the US then add Montreal, Mosport, Toronto, Edmonton and Mont-Tremblant. So really, if F1 were to only run the best circuits in the world then it'd spend most of it's time in North America and every so often make trips out to Spa, Suzuka, Bathurst, Interlagos etc.

But in a realistic world, if Watkins Glen or Long Beach applied for a F1 event the circuits would be completely destroyed to accommodate F1 anyway, so why bother?

An F1 race on an oval? Well you'd have to kit the cars out in completely different aero packages, so it'd be pointless really. Even the Monza spec cars would be far too draggy on an oval. They'd probably corner faster than IndyCars on ovals too so it'd just be flat out on almost every high banked oval in America. I do agree with that article that oval racing, especially in stock cars, is poorly understood outside of the US. Too many people are completely ignorant on the subject and just seem to think that it really is easy because it is only 2 corners. I guess if ignorance really was bliss there would be a lot more happy people.

At the end of the day you'd need new chassis, new aero packages, new rules, new tyres. You'd have to build so much expensive stuff for just 1 race. Is it really worth it? Especially when F1 fans don't tend to like oval racing? I'm actually thinking the other way. Not only would I prefer it if F1 stayed away from ovals, but I'd like NASCAR to cut back on a few to get 3 or 4 more road races in a year. IndyCar has a great balance.

Indeed. Honda aimed to see what the top speed was while staying within F1 regulations, at Bonneville a few year back. I think they only managed to average around 250mph off the top of my head, and that was with a V10 and without a rear wing!
