What new rules would you introduce for Formula 1

Reintroduce refueling.
Go back to V10s.
Ban any thing other than normal rims on tyres (like the thing Ferrari has got).
Reintroduce 107% rule.
Return aero rules to 2008 rules.
Remove engine limit (penaltys still apply when engine changed during race weekend).
Sorry to disagree but all of those things IMHO would make F1 a far duller sport. Perhaps banning silly wheel rims is a sensible suggestion, but the others would either have no effect or would be counter-productive to the spectacle of the sport.

Funny, I seem to remember almost each race at a Tilke drome being bandied as 'the most boring ever' race these days. What do you expect, miracles? There's no way a car behind another will catch the car ahead before the next corner with acceleration as it is nowadays. For that you'd either need one of two things:

1) Much slower acceleration for all cars
2) Massive speed differential

And we all know that maybe all 9 front teams' speed is much closer than it's ever been before. So find a way to slow down acceleration.
or have standard brakes, which are of a less efficient material to extend braking zones..

Better solution - have a stock diffuser - would stop all the diffusor rows every time someone whacks a new hole in theirs...

I liked martin whitmarsh's suggestion of having softer, more marginal tyres. In theory, a softer tyre would also move the balance of grip back towards mechanical grip, and thus reduce the reliance on aero efficiency

We need better circuits. Every year bahrain is boring, no matter what rules. We need imola restored to its pre 1995 glory, we need hockenheim like it was before 2002 with long straits and half the field in engine trouble. We need Spa, canada, suzuka to be on the calender every year. We need circuits which tests cars to its limits not have them driving around in circles behind each other. Maybe we need the old osterreichring before it was made into the A1-ring. Estoril was good to.

I know this is not going to happen but lets have a dicussion.

I like your ideas, wvdriel.

On the old Imola, would it be safer under current rules and regulations? In regards to the bottoming out of cars, or steering shafts not coming loose, or whatever the case might have been? I would guess the manufacturing of the steering shafts have improved immensely since then? Also, tyre walls would be a huge improvement to the concrete walls present at the old Imola.

I think if Senna would sit in todays cars and have his accident he would still be alive. We have come a long way since then. f1 just needs a variety of tracks which test all facets of the car. Nowadays we have a lot of similar (tilke) tracks and aerodynamics are thus very important.
Better engines,
No Diffusers,
Poorer tyre edurance, ....................... ????? :-O

GUYS, guys GUYS .......... hang on a minute, what in the name of apples will that do because then EVERYONE will be the same anyway and good cars will be fast whilst bad cars will be slow

To get F1 back to one form of excitement or another the answer is simple me thinks -------------------------------- > STOP CHANGING THE RULES, ALL THE RULES, JUST STOP IT !!!! (unless SAFETY is an issue)

Soon as the teams have figured out all the ins and outs of the RULES and have OVERCOME the supposed LIMITS by clever engineering THEN and only THEN WILL all be closer in performance, drivers be more at ease with how the cars react and perform and only then will we see racing as racing is intended to be.

Remember the rich teams will always be on top because money means getting to the maximum performance of new RULES quicker then the lesser financed teams. WHen the RULE CHANGES stop in a period of two or three seasons, RICH teams will have no NEW RULES to challenge and spend MONEY on to stay ahead other then to ensure they REFINE their machinery but as the cost of CHALLENGING NEW/REVISED rules disappear the gab between 1st on the grid and last on the grid will reduce whilst in between 1st and last, much more action and close racing may evolve. IN stead of a good engineer staying for years with one team, he may be approached by another team (for more income ???) to get that team up to a F1 standard. Just imagine a top engineer move to a back of the grid team and then begin to pull that team up towards the front. We will have action ON and OFF the track ... LOL

I SAY STOP THE RULE CHANGES, BRING BACK REFUELING, (refueling added that extra mistery and variance that teams could play with and it kept the PIT CREWS on their feet too!!! ;)

My penny's worth ........................... ;-)

The overtaking is made when braking. Carbon brakes are just too efficient, anyone can brake 2 cm before the curve and no getting out the track. So, ban carbon brakes and bring back steel brakes, so brave drivers that brake later than the others, can make more overtakings

senna4ever, the problem is that the core rules don't really make for great racing, even the FIA themselves in a way admit it with their continual tinkering of the rules. So changes ARE very much needed.
