I agree.

Legard's "up the hill, round the corner, what can he do now?, what is he thinking?" is going to have me switching to R5L commentary whenever possible this year.

well i watched some races from the 1999 season these days.... Boy murray is funny :D:D:D
soon i also watched indianapolis 2003 and i must say , well james is better for me than legard , but he shouldnt play the part , being idiot !
ALSO :
believe me !!!! there is no bigger pain in the ass than watching german commentator ( except JACQUES SCHULZ) ,
they never ever ever show any emotion . they have nice knowlege and so but they are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. so i also prefer emotions instead of big knowleges and so on :) and i think any passionate fan does ;)

That reminds me, the first year or two that Allen was commentating he tried to sound like Murray a lot of the time. Another fail from him then.

I miss his enthusiasm. He was passionate THROUGHOUT! I quit watching so many races last season through boredom.

James Allen kept me awake in the dull parts.

This for pure enthusiasm.

This for knowledge, ease of informity, useful yet not patronising, fluidid or at least decent reading a piece of paper well if that was the case. Sure, the red blooded motorsport fans hate the obvious and somewhat irrelevant facts such as the mercedes stand; or the crude 'hot in that cockpit' comments, but not everyone wants to just hear the car. People get bored easily, I found James Allen to cater well for new viewers as he answered ridiculous things say, my girlfriend would ask, likely about a merces grandstand or a dog on a track. I am bored very quickly in silence. Legard is not particularly well on silent periods, something I hate and am easily turned off in a second by with him.

Jenson drives it like he owns it; Lewis drives it like he stole it

jake is so good at presenting, so compfortable, and knowledgable, knowing car names from previous years, very intersting questions on the fly to interviees and good blogs. very well suported by dc and eddie. legard wasnt as annoying as normal today he may yet grow into the role.

Whenever I listen to Legard, I wish that Allen was commentating again. Whenever I hear Allen commentate, I feel glad that Legard's doing it! I guess the grass is always greener on the other side :P But then I tend to listen to the Radio 5 Live commentary instead, now that is one of the best commentary duos I have ever listened to live. Passionate, informed, funny, they keep the commentary flowing, and work together so well. For sheer entertainment they're right up there with Murray Walker and Martin Brundle imo.

Also, did anyone else think that Boris Becker was a very unusual choice for presenting the feature on Michael Schumacher? Why him?!

Boris Becker is Schumacher's biggest fan, bar none. ;-)

they're good mates also, and probably 2 of the most famous German sportsmen in history, so not a very unusual choice really.

Boris Becker does seem to be BBC Sport's resident German, and it does seem apt, as Muks said, both German and its one sporting legend praising another...but I don't know, I personally had the impression that, historically, Boris didn't like Schumacher that much. Might be wrong though.

While we're on the subject of commentators though and whose worse than the other, may I garner opinions about Jonathan Palmer's tenure as commentator?

Palmer was OK, but his problem was he was preceded by Hunt (big mouth, said it straight and liked most) and succeeded by Brundle.

If your missing James Allen it looks like he is working for One HD (Australia) now.

Dammit! My BBC red button is all broken on my Virgin Media box. Usually pressing red and and then number 1 brings up the gp + different audio options. But it brings up a sports news loop. Number 2 usually brings up onboard but brings up Rugby. Sort it out BBC! I want to listen to Crofty an JV.

I think that's probably the fairest way of looking at it - the comparison doesn't help, but I *still* think he was very dull to listen to. Could provide excellent insight, no doubt, but lacked that , I guess, charisma of Hunt and Brundle - the ability to be entertaining at the same time.

In regards to Legard and Allen... I guess I prefer Legard - I don't really seem to get annoyed by Legard, I don't even mind his joining battles and his pushing on. I do seem to get annoyed when he (and Brundle I have to admit to saying) miss what is directly in front of them, leaving me to wonder just how large the screen they're watching is, but I guess I prefer him to Allen. Thing is though, Allen was certainly knowledgeable, and while Legard is certainly not new to F1, he strikes me as being less confident, and that there maybe is a reason why they rarely seem to invite him down to the Forum afterwards. Jake, for all his admissions about struggling to learn everything, seems more comfortable talking about F1. That said, whether he could commentate as well as he presents is another matter. I do think he is a bloody good presenter however.

On the subject of Brundle however - I do adore his grid walks, but I hate to say it, the back ground fear that - foul mouthed drivers and rock stars aside - he's actually going to get into a lot of trouble seem to be ever rising. In the old days he seemed to have the complete freedom of the grid (baring the drivers who just refused to talk to him) but now it seems its become really aggressive - what with - what, was it "Tanya" from Austrian Sky TV last year turning into his mortal enemy - and now physically aggressive according to his account of some "TV lady" who took to repeatedly kicking him in the leg while he was trying to talk to Alonso today...
So with that and the fact that, seemingly with physiotherapists and trainers being banned from the grid the drivers won't bother to pitch up before the last minute, Martin's gridwalks are becoming less and less pleasant. :(

i think F1 prolem is that there are many new fans ... THEY JUST DONT UNDERSTAND THE SPORt ! really i dont think there are less overtakings in the ffront then there used to be !!!!
HOWEver i agree that after FIA decided to start freezing this and that after 2004 f1 became less attractive but it is not soo bad as people point it out.

and one more thing , did anyone read what prost have said , about the teams having to understand the new strategies and use every little chance and possibility of variety in them ??
Actually prost defended the new system , so did DC . Those are guys who i'm really sure, understand the sport , and if they defend the new rules, then it must be for good :)

Really? If that's true - the "lady's" behaviour is beyond out of order, and I'm astonished. It's an F1 grid, not a kindergarten playground. She should be reprimanded - or, better still, she should've just had her cans/microphone/camera/whatever confiscated immediately afterwards(extreme maybe, but it would be appropriate - when kids play up, one possible punishment is to take their toys away. And anyway, she clearly isn't responsible enough to use equipment like that properly). She should be made to apologise to Brundle too. Utterly pathetic.

But yeah, the grid is seeming like a much less human place these days, or it did today anyway.

If it's anything like ITV, the screen is quite small - 14" or so. That said, we've only got 1 thing to look at (or 2 if you're watching Live Timing at the same time). They've got the screens (at least 2), a director in their ear and 1/3 of track and a pitlane outside of the commentary box that they can be watching too.

To be fair, that's the way Brundle has to play it sometimes. :D

danm's clips are perfect evidence of why Legard is terrible as a commentator - he's so lifeless, won't let martin get a word in edgeways - i got the sense that martin just gave up during the race today.

I normally watch 5Live, but my PC decided that it can't find the red button channels on the TV tuner, so i've been stuck with the snooze crew all weekend...

Now, if you'll excuse me, i'm off to watch the 1997 oz GP with two proper commentators...

Actually, was it me, or was Legard better this weekend than I remember him being last year? There were a few times I did notice him seeming to stop Martin from speaking, which bugged me a bit, but altogether he seemed more in touch with what was happening, using his old catchphrases less, and talking more rather than droning.

Yup, fair point. Guess it just gets right up my nose when I hear about people doing silly things like that. :P
Hopefully this won't deter Martin from his great style he uses on the grid walks. No reason why it should.

Did anyone notice during the race that Martin was completely shocked when Senna's car broke down and he lifted his visor. Sounded like his voice cracked for a second!
