I've just read a rather good interview with Christian Horner where he says that "It's down to them to do the job. It's a heck of a challenge for any grand prix team – irrespective of size – but they've been given the opportunity and it's wrong for anyone to judge them until we get into the racing season. I'm sure they're all working very hard. It's a big challenge to design, produce, manufacture and develop a grand prix car, but hopefully they'll all make the grid in Bahrain." [www.crash.net]

This made me think. What happens if the teams don't make it? I mean, it's not as if theyre not even trying. I'm sure they're all doing their absolute utmost to be able to make it to the grid and are all deadly serious, otherwise why would they even enter in the first place. Would they be prevented from competing in the entire championship because they missed the first race? Or would it be a case of them joining whenever they could make it (say, maybe the 2nd or 3rd round).

By the regulations you can not miss a race then join in later.

If they dont make it then I suspect they will ahve to pay some sort of fine or something.

Could they not enter their half finished car into the race and then withdraw it again on safety grounds? Therefore taking part in the race weekend and giving themselves more time to work on it lol.

That's what Arrows did when they puffed out their last breath. I don't know if that's still legal though.

Arrows did it because of problems with the payment for the Cosworth engines, because Tom Walkinshaw is a dodgy bastard. That was the French GP. At the British GP they hadn't paid and Cosworth with held the starter equipment, so they couldn't take part.

Yes, the story behind it was different, but the reason was the same: avoiding a fine/exclusion.

So yes, in theory I guess a team could turn-up with a half-finished car and no qualify or something...

I guess the reasoning behind it is based on customer satisfaction to both the TV viewers and spectators. If such a thing does happen which like you said, will be doubtful I would like to think the FIA and FOTA would be willing to let the team carry on the rest of the season despite not having taken part in the first event.

USF1 say they are to be at the first test ( cant remember where I read that), if Dallara is on time with the car then Campos will certainly be present from the first test, and Lotus have stated they will join in at the second Jerez test giving them only that 4 days and the 4 days at Barcelona to prepare. Hopefully that is where we will see the benifits of Heikki and Trulli! I guess Manor will attend the first test too. I do hope Manor, USF1 and Campos attend all the test sessions for all days.

I think, it's equal if a new or a old team has only 4 days to test (that's only a example). Both will have problems in the first race and I'm sure, this will happen this season again (like in 2009). hot

Ligier missed the first Grand Prix of 1987 because they were to use Alfa Romeos until Arnoux said they were crap, Alfa were offended, and Ligier didn't have an engine anymore (until they got Megatrons at the next Grand Prix). I saw this in a review book by Murray Walker which I can't find right now - I can't remember the exact details of any punishments or dispensations they were given - of course 23 years later it may no longer be relevant. :\

Yes, I remember Arrows at their last grand prix in France.

Frentzen and Bernoldi really pushing it around most of the track until the last couple of corners. I seem to recall that they were doing quite respectable sector times until they backed off as well!

Dallara is ahead of schedule with the car. A previous story which was posted on some generic F1 news site about Campos running out of cash has been denied by Dallara now too. They said they never stopped development and there has been no issues with payment. So Campos are fine.

No idea on the state of Manor/Virgin, or Lotus, or even Sauber.

USF1 seems to be more powered by hopes, dreams and fairydust than anything else, but we'll see.
