great news.. althou expected

F1-live has made a lot of errors in the last couple of months, i tought of them as a very reliable source but it seems since they sold it they changed a lot of their staff... now they're just another sensational magazine.. anything they hear they go public

Kobayashi confirmed as one of the Sauber drivers. :)

Mh, I was hoping for something a little more solid than Kobayashi, sure he might be fast, but when the pressure is on and he needs to turn out performances, he's an unknown quantity.

Meh... arguably you could say the same about Senna and di Grassi as well.

His solid driver will be Heidfeld if Merc go for someone else. Heidfeld is waiting on Merc and Sauber is waiting on Heidfeld. Everyone was saying that the drivers market would go nuts as soon as Alonso's future was sorted, then it was Button and Raikkonen holding the keys and now we've got Schumacher.... and that's not going to happen any time soon apparently - New Year at the earliest.

You don't get more solid and dependable than Heidfeld - he's so solid and unspectacular that that's not necessarily a compliment.

If every team would pick a solid, known quantity, then we would never have never seen either Kimi or Massa debut in 2001 and 2002, sometimes as a teamowner you have to take gambles, many lack it, Peter Sauber luckily doesn't :)

Sure it can go bad, but he was the best of the fill in drivers of 2009, so surely he can't be that bad? If he goes bad, he will get replaced, if it goes good, Peter might be able to sell him for more $$$ to a topteam.

All the names that have made an impact on F1 who started with Sauber:

1994: Heinz-Harald Frentzen
2001: Kimi Raikkonen
2002: Felipe Massa
2006: Robert Kubica

Frentzen was a Mercedes protege who was parachuted into the team.
Massa was a Ferrari protege who raced at Maranello's behest in return for supplying engines.
Kubica made his debut for BMW, when Peter Sauber no longer had a say over driver contracts.

So Raikkonen is really the only "impact" driver to have started with Sauber, and to be honest, at the time he joined F1 if he hadn't got a ride with Sauber then someone else would have given him his debut anyway.

Yeah, you could argue that Minardi launched the careers of more top drivers than Sauber.
Good to see Kobayashi confirmed with a drive for 2010 though - and Sauber is a good team for a driver who's shown promise like he has to prove himself over a season.

Agreed!! Perfectly summed up I think!

edit - I am glad Kobayashi has a good seat. I reckon this team could do some good things next year.

Good to see Kobayashi get a full chance, it would have been a pity for him not to have had a full season to prove his worth.

In his two races of the year, Kobyashi showed far more promise than Grosjean/Buemi/Algusuari did over the entire duration of their season races.

Sure, he is an unknown quantity, but out of two races he has a 100% record of solidity. And when you see its the first two races ever of his in F1, that makes it more impressive. He may be a two hit wonder, we won't know unless he is given more chances. BUT. Duelling Button showed maturity, and if the fact he could have wiped and destroyed a world championship runner in his debut but didn't do a thing wrong, if that doesn't show maturity and pressure, then I don't know what is, this early in his career.

I will be rooting for this guy in 2010, along with Rosberg.

And further to that, as Peter Sauber very astutely said, he proved at Abu Dhabi that he can implement a strategy, which included saving tyres on a heavy fuel load, an important skill in 2010
