Yeah. It had fuel consumption and reliability issues at 21,000 RPM. At 18,000 RPM neither are problems.

The Cosworth engine might be ok now that they plan to bring the other ones back towards it.

There was nothing wrong with the new Cosworth engine in the first place.

This has promising early signs for US F1 and Lotus. It would be good to see a completely new team come in and be competitive straight away, like Jordan were in 1991 for example.

Maybe so, but this article from August seems to suggest otherwise, and is the reason that I had doubts of the performance of the engine.

It is heavier and less fuel efficient than the current generation of engines and while this can be improved upon in the mid-term, it is not going to happen before the start of the 2010 season. It is reckoned that because there will be no refuelling next year, Cosworth cars will have to carry an additional 18kg of fuel. This will mean that the designers will have to build bigger fuel tanks and this will effect both the weight distribution of the cars and the handling. The result of all this will be that the cars will use their tyres less efficiently than the existing teams. Engineers from rival teams calculate that this will cost the three new Cosworth teams around three to four seconds a lap. [www.grandprix.com]

Joe Saward has often been wrong in the past though, so that could be inaccurate. It certainly seems a very extreme prediction. iirc, some Williams engineers predicted 1 second per lap, but I can no longer find that source. With the engine equalisation, this could be reduced though.

@james84: you should go to this thread to guess the driver line-ups in full:

if the fuel regulations will be the same as the last time when we had full tanks then each car will hav the same amount of fuel at the start of each race

so basically the engine suppliers wil hav to get their acts together and build a efficient fuel consumption engine

which then is fair why should 1 team hav more fuel to get to the end of the race

i remember the days when some cars used to run out of fuel

mind u when they changed to refuelling also remember a certain driver not pitting on his allocated stop trying to squeeze another lap then runs out of fuel lol Jean Alesi i`m pretty sure it was lol

So what if a driver runs out of fuel with ten laps to go and refuels? Will he be disqualified or get a penalty or something else?

Well ninemsn, Aussie news, are reporting that Rubens and Hulkenberg will be driving for Williams in 2010, but havn't seen it on ANY f1 site yet!

If the cars are anything like last time no refuelling was allowed, there will be no nozzle for refuelling in the pits to take place. It'll all be done with funnels.

With the technology today you will not see such a thing happening. The drivers will make it to the end every race.

Is really No Fuel Stops thing is good? Does it make any difference like say more overtaking ,etc ,.... I think it's another failure step which will be gone in 2011 like no Tyre change in 2005.

I'm not very enthusiastic about it, because now there are no many overtaking on track, but at least there is in pit when stopping later so you can go with less fuel for a few laps. This is now gone so where else can a driver overtake? Going out of the box with fresh tyres? maybe...

It looks like they are just copying the claims of a Brazilian newspaper

I think the idea behind is that there was no overtaking on track because you would overtake in the pitlane. Why would you risk overtaking somebody on the track when you know you can overtake him in the pitstops? Take away the pitstops and you're forced to overtake someone on track. The theory seems good, now we just have to wait if it works.

I think we should end up having a few new strategies for tyres though...since fuel loads will always be close, the tyre situation should be a lot more flexible.

yes, and because pitstops will be so short, it will add even more options for the teams.

I'm hoping they keep the same tyre compounds they've had this year. If they did, with the cars starting the races so much heavier, it would make the ability to preserve tyres much more important than it has been to the current generation of drivers. It would make for some interesting viewing, too, whenever drivers wore their tyres out.

Overall, I think the banning of refuelling is a damn good thing.
