Numbers at Ferrari would be

5 for Felipe and 6 for Alonso seeing as he's new to a team. Felipe was already confirmed as a first driver anyways. So this concludes that 5 = Felipe. And yes this is fanboy talk ;)

They should drive with number 13, sillyness.

The number 13 has never been used since the numbering system was brought in. Mainly superstitious reasons, IIRC.

Before the previous number system (so the one in which Ferrari had 27 and 28 for most of the time), how did they allocate the numbers? Was there any system at all or was it just random?

I agree! 4 means death in Japan and Sato didnt have anything against using it in 2005. Whole thing is pure sillyness.

Kimi, so, Massa Fernando Sebastian is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message?

I vaguely remember that they took out 13 because two people who drove with it crashed fatally in a short time span.

The previous numbering system came into force at the start of 1974.
Before 1973, drivers raced with different numbers at each GP, regardless of what team they were driving for or where they'd finished in the standings the previous season. This was because the teams got given their racing numbers independently by the race organisers at each race when they entered their drivers. So yeah, you're right, the numbering was random before then.
1973 was kind of a transition year between the two. Halfway through that season FOCA arranged for all the teams to submit one joint entry application for the races, and that meant FOCA could take over the numbering. For the 2nd half of 1973 the teams got assigned the same two numbers for their cars for each race, but there were still no numbers assigned specifically to one driver(For example, Jackie Stewart raced both as #5 and as #6 in various races later that year).

Regarding #13, no driver has ever died racing it. It's actually only ever raced once, in Mexico in 1963. The last time an F1 car #13 was entered for a race was at Brands Hatch in 1976, when the driver failed to qualify.
So I'd imagine it's just assumed to be unlucky.

The team numbers only changed when there was a new world champion. In 1975 Mclaren has 1 and 2 cars, Ferrari 11 and 12, 1976 was Ferrari 1 and 2 and McLaren 11 and 12, 1977 like 1975, and 1978 Lauda went to Brabham so McLaren take the 7 and 8 from Brabham, Ferrari kept 11 and 12 and Brabham took the 1 and 2. Then in 1979 the 1 and 2 went to Lotus, and 5 and 6 (previous Lotus numbers) to Brabham. In 1980 Ferrari recovered the 1 and 2 but as Williams was champion that year, in 1981 Williams have taken 1 and 2 and Ferrari 27 and 28 (pre- Williams numers), and as the last pre-2000 Ferrari Ferrari had won was in 1979, they kept 27 and 28 until 1995, and in 1996 they changed to the current system

Good list there. The one detail I'd add off the top of my head would be Ferrari having #1 and #2 in 1990 and, of course, Macca having 27 and 28. There are other examples of the numbers being shuffled around too, like Macca having #11 and #12 in 1988.
That numbering system was kind of a pain, really.

Chances of the driver driving car 22 winning the championship for the 3rd year running?

22 seems to be the number to have! Even if you have obtained it because your team was disqualified or your team was shut down and sold!

SexySam, I think he's talking about the possibility of #22 winning it again in 2010.

@Nick, no problem.

Given that this is about the 2010 season, I'll put this here rather than start a new thread.

Red Bull will apparently make a decision about their engine supplier for next year in Brazil. Newey is pressuring them to make a decision so they can get the dimensions right.

Mercedes, Renault and Cosworth are options. I'm surprised that RBR would consider Cosworth, surely the Renault engine would be a better option?

The article also mentions that Cosworth could form an alliance with Porsche.

The Cosworth is supposedly extremely powerful.

Thought they were going to have problems with the fuel consumption though? Unless of course the power advantage is so much that it negates the disadvantage of carrying a larger fuel tank.

Edit - Problems as in the fuel consumption will be higher than the other engines, think I read that somewhere.
