BUT, how much of that was under Ron Dennis as opposed to Martin Whitmarsh? Keeping in mind that this year we have a situation where Heikki is a clear #2 to Lewis, but if you have two frontrunners in one team, would Whitmarsh start trying to pick favourites (or at least at the start of the season when it's still open.)? If he does, he's a fool.
Then, there's the small matter of Kimi's Ferrari contract, Ferrari could use this to their advantage and say McLaren must buy Kimi's contract, thus giving Ferrari a whole lot of $ and a free seat for Alonso, should he be going there in 2010. Would McLaren be willing to pay for that just to have a #2 driver? That would also be nuts.
Also Kimi's been around for a while, if McLaren are trying to build up a strong pairing, then treating Kimi like a second driver wouldn't work because he could quite easily tell them to stick it after one season.
