Rubens Barrichello has a new deal with Honda for 2009 and will be testing the car at Silverstone this week, GPUpdate.net has been informed. Chances of the popular Brazilian retaining his drive increased last week, with a management buyout of the team now looking more likely.

Barrichello's drive was put in doubt when Honda announced its withdrawal from Formula One in December, with a high possibility of sponsors' favourite Bruno Senna taking his compatriot's seat alongside Britain's Jenson Button.

However GPUpdate.net has been informed by sources close to the team this morning that Barrichello, the most experienced man in F1, has been retained for 2009 and is expected to be at Silverstone this week for a shakedown of the new car.

This news follows recent comments from Mercedes' Norbert Haug which hinted that "'a very suprising name" could be offered a drive in Germany's premier touring car series DTM this season.

fits with what we were hearing at the end of last week.

i heard a rumour that emirates airlines are going to be the main sponsors.

also that there could be an announcement on thursday to clear alot of this up.

[edit]

emirates deny it.

As posted in the other thread - if true, it's definitely the most sensible choice. Put Bruno out to pasture for a year, then bring him in for 2010 when the team has a bit more stability.

Its not gonna happen.

Bruno Senna himself has already denied/turned down/refused (or whatever is the negative word) the DTM talks.

The only thing he said is that with Haug they had only talked about F1.

But if Senna dont drive in F1, he would be another year in Gp2?

It'd make perfect sense. After the uncertainty and upheaval the team have had, two experienced drivers who they know well would provide continuity and a confidence boost, apart from anything else. Plus, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Bruno Senna could do worse than take on the test driver role he's almost certain to get now. That way he can gain much-needed testing experience this season, ready to go for a race seat in 2010.

Oh, thanks Dave!

According to the Brazilian press, Rubens went yesterday to England.

I guess then, possibly to rejoin to the team already.

Who says the surprising name is Senna? It might be totally someone else.

Yup thats what he says. if theres no F1 seat, he'll do another GP2 season.

1. Test Driver role is useless this season. In-season testing is BANNED. Therefore he is not considering any offers for test driver roles, he wants full time seat, if not hes going to GP2.

@Nick: Yup. I wouldnt be surprised if its the other way around, sending that old bad driver to DTM limbo and Senna to take the "Ex-Honda" :)

Agreed. He also said words to that effect in an interview during the ITV2 coverage of the final rounds of last season at Monza.

Test Driver role is useless this season. In-season testing is BANNED.

-----

The 2009 sporting regulations say young drivers who have not contested a grand prix in the last two years "nor tested a formula one car on more than four days in the same 24 month period" are excluded from the in-season testing ban.

he spent two days driving the car at barcelona, i thought it made him not eligible for that exception. Still, its not good enough for him to get a test driver role, he MUST get a fulltime seat in order to make the most of it in his debut season.

Great News, Rubens is staying. Glad of Honda to give him a contract

but then that rule would allow him to get an unlimited shot at testing...

Jenson drives it like he owns it; Lewis drives it like he stole it

I doubt it. The teams will still be restricted to only 15000 kms per year I reckon.
Yeah...I mean if in-season testing is banned, what is Senna going to test?

Once again the rules seem amazingly vague. What constitutes testing?

I think its only the preseason testing and then when the development stage kicks in there's another test session?
Surely once he'd reached four days of testing, he wouldn't be allowed any more? So that would mean two days of testing for Senna.
