Overall their coverage is good. After listening to the 5live commentary team for both of the sessions, i feel that the 5live team is way way better than the TV commentary team. I guess i know what i'll be listening to

+ 1

Although I'll probably give the tv crowd another chance for the race. The guys for 5 Live really sound like they're having the craic, Anthony Davidson obviously knows the technical ins-and-outs of Formula 1, but can also explain them clearly and succintly, Ian Phillips' one-of-the-lads nature makes me like Force India more and more and the questions put to Davidson by Croft are intelligent and very insightful. Superb job all round.

Yeah, I have been immensely impressed with David Croft, Anthony Davidson and Ian Phillips during the practise sessions. Informative, insightful and it sounds like they're enjoying themselves along the way. I was particularly impressed with the way in which they answered viewer's texts - especially the one by a 10 year old - Anthony answered it in a way a child would have no problem understanding without being patronising to the kid or indeed the rest of us. I just can't see James Allen would pull that off.

Really impressed with BBC coverage so far, it is really is a full step above what ITV were able to offer us. My only niggle is that I think they shoot themselves in the foot slightly by not announcing all the features they have on TV, only detailing them on the web. I heard no mention of the red button services at all during the quali or race programmes last weekend.

All in all it's a big thumbs-up from me. :)

David Croft was dire doing the GP2 last year. He just made constant mistakes - not Murray-like mistakes of basically getting confused, but basic ones where he couldn't tell very different corners apart and which car was which.

Maybe he didn't care too much about GP2, but he seems a lot better doing the F1 practice this season.

He works well with Davidson, but I think Davidson is carrying him a bit, which isn't good considering Davidson is only on his 3rd event or something.

He talks better than Legard does though. His general chit-chat is a lot better than both Legard and Allen.

if no-one had told you he used to be a kids tv presenter, you wouldn't know it from his presenting on the F1. i've never seen him before and he seems fine to me. i prefer him much more than Jim or Steve, he sounds like he's actually asking the questions from his own mind, rather than asking from a script or from what people are telling him in his earpiece (although they probably are, but he just deals with it better, IMO).

Ive never liked these.....dont know how you call them, like Jim and Ryder, they all seem to wooden for me and too scripted. I would rather brundle do all the introductions...

yes he did, because they do a version of the commentary for children, so when you press the red button you get the choices displayed as: TV, 5Live, or CBBC.

we discussed it near the bottom of page 13 of this thread.

Seriously disappointed with Legard today, again. I want to give him a chance, I really do, but he doesn't carry the commentary at all well. Seems disjointed and not really appropriate to whats happening on track, also fails to pick up on quite a few noticeable events (edited out examples, forgot about possible spoilers lol) and I don't know how many times he's just barged infront of Martin so far lol. I would happily switch over to five live to hear 'Crofty n Ant' if it weren't for the fact I'd be missing out on Brundle :( . The rest of the team is superb though, EJ seems to have learnt when to stop talking now and Humphrey is a great host imo.

I don't get why people are so hard on Legrand, he's certainly no worse than the ITV commentary we've had for the last 5 years. Nobody will ever replace Murray in the rose-tinted eyes of the fans. I'm cure if "Crofty" had got the job in the commentary box, people would still be trying to find fault with him instead.

To tell you the truth, for the first race he wasn't as good. But through the race though, he was actually good as he kept on top the action.

Good coverage today despite having to basically fill for nearly an hour.

I'm not coming down on him intentionally, don't have anything against at all :) I just feel that he's not quite up to the job at the moment. I'm still reserving judgement because I want him to do well, he seems to know his stuff but he just makes the races seem stop-start, like a string of seperate non-related events whereas James Allen, annoying as he was at times with his cringeworthy ways, kept the race flowing nicely. I'm sure it's just a case of practice and gelling with Brundle but if you get chance, have a listen to the practice commentary with Croft and Davidson. It may just be because its only friday practice and more relaxed but the way the commentary flows is noticeably better.

As I said, I haven't got anythin against him like some people on the internet are like against James Allen, I just feel he could be (and want him to be) doing a better job :) . For the record I'm only 20 and only really started watching F1 seriously around 2003 so the Murray glory days are well before my time lol.

Legard was better today, but still made a number of glaring errors...people make the comparison to Murray and Murray making errors as well and that Murray is over-rated....well it was they way that Murray made errors that made him special, he would get completely over-the-top excited. Legard just makes errors. In fairness, a lot of commentators just don't have the voice and style of speaking to make them good commentators like Murray did: I would happily have watched Setanta Sport for the last number of years instead of ITV except for the fact that the main commentator Declan Quigley has the most irritating voice ever. It's a pity because the technical commentators on Setanta, Gary Anderson and particularly David Kennedy are actually awesome.

Major ROFL at Brundle's pitwalk today though!

I'll add that the BBC graphics (grid line up, weights etc) are a thousand times better than ITV ever managed though!

Thought EJs interview with Bernie was hilarious. He was in so far over his head, Bernie even stopped giving complete answers and just stopped talking. Eddie just said "Ok" and moved on.
